Cat not normal

Hi - my male cat (2 yrs) has just walked in and lied straight down on the kitchen floor, his sides heaving in and out and with each breath, a noise a bit like a growl-y wheeze.

He doesn't seem to be in any pain or growl when I touch him (as he would normally when he's in pain) but just wants to lay down. He smells a bit as though a cat has sprayed him.

Does it sound like he's been kicked or been in a cat fight?

He seems to have calmed down now and the noise has gone when he breathes. I was really worried - any ideas as to what it might have been?

Actually it's still a bit squeaky each time he breathes. He is resting on the sofa now and his sister is cleaning him.
