Is my cat going gaga?

He is an older boy, about 13 we think. All in all very healthy and still prone to chasing after something and nothing in the garden like a wee kitten. But in the last couple of weeks his behaviour has become a little odd. When we are around he would have never ever got onto a table or kitchen work surface (don't know about night time) but suddenly now he's jumping up there bold as brass and strutting about! Yesterday he sat next to me whilst I had a sandwich at lunch time and right in front of me tried to paw my sandwich off the plate!!!! I do think on the whole he drinks a lot more water and eats more food, which I know can be a sign of kidney failure, which is common in older cats, but what's with the sudden lack of discipline?? Is he going bonkers?

It could be attention seeking. Sometimes if a cat isn't feeling great they will become clingy or behave out of character. Might be a good idea to take him to the vet for some blood tests. If he does have kidney disease they will be able to prescribe him a special diet to manage his . It's best to check these things out as early as possible to slow down the progression. My cat has early kidney disease. I found out a couple of months ago having noticed him drinking a lot more water over a few months. He has become a bit more attention seeking too which is why I thought of it.

Thanks - will take him to the vet to get it checked out.

Actually rather than kidney disease over active thyroid is more of a possibility as you have signs of hyperactivity and increased appetite so yes a blood test is very much in order.
