I think my girl cat has had a cat bite that is now a small burst abcess.

Is there anything I can use on it over the weekend to clean it or should I leave well alone?

Boiled (but cool-ish) water with salt in it, bathe wound with kitchen towel or cotton wool.

she keeps washing it thoroughly so perhaps I should leave alone?

It's bald with a distinct puncture wound but not red or raised Confused

I wish her brother was more protective of her!

Problem is their mouths aren't v clean really.

So the original bite may get infected from the 'biter's mouth' & now she might infect it from her mouth.

Sorry btw that my response was so short last night i was heading off to bed.
One of our cats was at the vest last weekend with a cat bite on his chest & the vet said to keep bathing it and not to worry if the scab kept coming off as it was more important to clean it, DH did it until he went back to work i couldn't face it
It had dried out & scabbed by Fri and was looking ok-ish, certainly healing. Then he came in last night with a fresh hole next to the original one & what appeared to be a wound near his bum Hmm
He wouldn't come near us so DH hoping to sort it out today, stupid cat!

You could do with a vet to come on really to advise, hopefully one will come along.. Personally I''d leave it, keep her in then take her to vet tomorrow as long as she doesn't seem unwell today. They quite often need a shot of anti inflammatories and anti biotics to deal with it.

JustKeepSwimming · 20/03/2011 06:55

Oh yes, our vet gave him 2 jabs last weekend, so at least he should still be covered for ABs - apparently lasts 2 weeks, wish we could just have a jab for ABs instead of remembering to take them 3x a day for a week!

If she is well in herself bath it twice a day with warm from kettle that has boiled and cool water 1 pint of water with a teaspoon of salt in it. She should then see a vet tomorrow.
If she is unwell or not eating it is probably best to see a vet today.
If you were my client this is the advice I would give you.

It's looking good today, dried out absolutely flat - it's along her spine so no flesh to hide any infection IYSWIM.

Took 10 mins to find it as she is a long haired semi-long hair. She is completely chilled and eating fine etc.

I shall keep a close eye on it - I think it's been horrid and then burst and is now healing properly Blush

She is up to date on her vacs etc and as demanding as ever. Last time she was unwell she withdrew so she def isn't ill yet.

I have the water pistol at the ready for the black cat that is terroising her Grin
