scratchy cats!

I have 4 gorgeous cats, 3 of them scratch a lot. They have been scratching my new wool rug and new gloss kitchen cupboards which luckily still have their protective covering on because we are still decorating. They also scratch my bed base, bedroom cupboard, and carpert threshholds. Help.
They have one medium sized scratch post.
Also we currently haven't got a cat flap because we have had building works going on and the door which had a flap has been replaced with a wall!
Any advice pleaseShock

Buy more cat scratching posts and put some catnip on to entice them to scratch them. We got some new fabric sofas and bought new bigger scratching posts to try and deter our two cats from scratching the new furniture. Put the posts where there is a problem scratching

I bought some tall (ie 80 and 90 cms high)sturdy catposts with very solid carpet covered bases as our boys are both tall cats - they have had a good go at both the carpet base and the post but better that than the sofa. I picked up a cat behaviour book from a jumble sale and the lady writer recommended number of cats plus one as the number of cat posts in the household. We have just the two posts but it has definitely been a help even though, style wise, it doesn't add to the decor in my living room!

It also helps if you can position the scratch posts on a 'route' that the cats use, e.g. my cat often scratches the sofa on her way across the lounge when she has entered via the patio door, so the post is between that and the sofa. Chances are she scratches the post first and often ignores the sofa.

Get Feliway spray and spray it where they are scratching.

I have a post at the bottom of the stairs and one at the top Hmm both are used, but I second the poster who says get a tall one with a large base, mine is half covered in carpet and half in siscal (sp?). It also has a dangly thing on it to get their interest.
