My gorgeous tom is being neutered today! The vet called it castrated, and that made me feel really sad.
I hope I am doing the right thing buy having this op. I suppose he is having it done because that's the done thing!
He is so handsome - now he will be "ball-less"
Please assure me I was right to book him in. There's no going back now.
i suppose people get this done to their tom's to calm them down, to stop them spraying/marking their territory.
I feel sad Sad

Its completely the right thing to do - theres enough unwanted kittens out there, and neutered boys do tend to fight and wander less.

They really don't suffer for not having testes, and don't look much different

You are doing the right thing in my opinion.
He is lucky to have such a caring owner and you can spoil him afterwardsSmile

winnybella · 18/03/2011 12:45

And to stop them from impregnating other cats-that's quite important as there so so many unwanted cats/kittens. It's the responsible thing to do.

It'll be fine, my two were ok after coming home after the op.

It's right and it's responsible pet keeping too.

My little ginger tom was done last week. He's absolutely fine. Barely noticed a difference in him. The vet said plain food and keep him in for two days, but he was ravenous when he got home so had his normal dry food and was begging to go out the next morning and play in the garden.

I know just how you feel. I've always felt I was marring something perfect when I took my cats to be spayed/neutered.

They've always recovered quickly though, have no memory of the event, and lead happy lives, unperturbed by the pressures of sex and reproduction.

Beauregard · 18/03/2011 12:47

wish i had a cat but dp wont let me lol

bamboobutton · 18/03/2011 12:48

neutering made no difference to my toms behavior, he's still a moody, agressive fighting tom, think greeboGrin. i just spent a fortune at the vets sorting his savaged ear and huge abscess from his recent fight.

the only difference is the spraying.

Thank you all for your very supportive comments. I feel a lot happier now. x

you are right to have him neutered,it's the responsible thing to do. I've had boy cats who have been just as wonderful since neutering.
I was v upset at having my kitten spayed last week, but I know it has to be done- kittens would have been lovely but I know I'd want to keep at least one and would worry about finding nice homes for them.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/03/2011 19:36

Mine was fine too, no change just less likely to pounce on me every 5 mins when I'm sitting on the sofa. "stop biting mommy", cat "bugger off".

pinkhebe · 19/03/2011 13:07

there has been no change in my Tom either, he's still the sappy kit he's always been

SecretNutellaFix · 19/03/2011 21:18

Seriously- it will be much better in teh long run.

I will admit I didn't think twice about getting my boy done- I've had an unneutered tom before and it's really unpleasant trying to get eau-de-tomcat out of a duvet.

With my boy now, if he's being completely sappy or just a pain in the backside, I do call him "No-Bollocks" and DH tells me offGrin
