Feeling so sad

Our dear and much loved cat had to be put to sleep yesterday. she was very ill and it was for the best, but we are devastated. I don't understand how one small, black, merry little cat could leave such a huge hole in our lives. DH was in tears last night and I can't stop crying.

I know she was 'just' a cat, but she was ours, she was part of our little family and we loved her.

My small black cat was put to sleep a year ago- she had breast cancer.

Of course you'll grieve- let yourselves do it.

I'm so so sorry. People get really attached to their pets and it's v normal. Was she old? I v nearly lost my dear friend Sam (14 year old black cat) last week and we're still not out of the woods. I too cried my eyes out. Don't feel bad about being emotional and my DH was upset about it too. It was like a person dying for me. Sending you lots of hugs at this sad time.

There is no such thing as "just a cat". She was a cherished, loved, family member who was a dear friend. You are understandably grieving for her and you shouldn't feel silly for it.

We are sending lots of hugs and we'll light a candle for her.

We lost our first family cat Harvey 7.5 years ago at a month short of his 17th birthday.
I took him to the vets by myself as I loved him and he loved me the most in our small family.
My husband offered to come with me but it was something I needed to do myself.
At the time my husbands sister and her 2 teenagers were staying with us over easter (she had lost her 47yr old husband 18 months before from malignant melanoma) and she said later that our cat dying had really affected her, just the sadness in our house I think on that day.
My son, 15 at the time had tears in his eyes when I came back without him (he wasn't even the cat lover of my kids) and the 10 year old who was a cat person took it in his stride.
I spent the next 4 (only 4) days always on the edge of tears, and doing stuff in the kitchen when I suddenly thought I saw him out of the corner of my eye.
After this I started to think sbout him without tears and 6 months later we got the chap we have now. Not as friendly and loving by any means, but still our litle (or rather big british short hair) chap who we love just as dearly

I remember when our family cat was put to sleep at the age of 18, when I was 20. I remember crying and crying in the bath.

She wasn't "just" a cat, as you say she was part of your family and you will grieve for her.

We lost our lovely girlcat two years ago and DH, DS and I still think about her and DS in particular gets very sad thinking about her, it's all natural. We now have her aged brother, who probably will keep on for years but is elderly and two "kittens" ( 2 year olds, still growing, size of small tigers) but they don't replace her - however they're all themselves and lovely. I'm sure your cat was happy and loved and that's all you can do for them.

no such thing as "just" a cat. They worm their way into your hearts, your home and your cupboards very easily

She was loved very much and it's ok to miss what you loved.

I'm so sorry. We had to have our 17 year old black cat PTS in August as she had cancer of the jaw and gradually got worse until she really couldn't eat or drink any more. It was the hardest decision to make. She was such a sweet little thing, my little purring machine.

We still talk about her all the time, especially my DD whom the cat loved. We have another older cat and 2 kittens who are lovely and naughty but we still miss our Pepperpot as she was such a dainty little ladylike cat.

There would be something wrong if you didn't feel so upset. It's just a reflection of how much you loved her and I'm sure she knew that.

Thanks for all your replies - it's nice to know we're not alone. Our small kit was nearly 13 and had been perfectly healthy all her life until she stopped eating about a month ago - vet thought it was her teeth first, or perhaps pancreatitis, and gave her anti inflammatories which seemed to help - we though she was getting back to normal. But then she stopped eating again, and a growth was found after a scan. It turns out she had stomach and pancreatic cancer

We feel lucky to have had her in our lives.
