Does anyone have a cat that doesn't want to go outside? Not sure what to do...

Our cat is a male rescue. He was hit by a car so has spent months inside recovering (not all at out house) but is very active and confident.

He's been allowed out since last week and knows how the cat flap works (he has used it) although possibly he's not so sure coming back in since he stayed out all night the one time he did decide to go out and didn't come back til I opened the door and called.

Theoretically I'm not bothered if he wants to be a housecat, but he doesn't like his scratching post and is destroying the carpet so I want him to get used to scratching outside at least even if he comes straight back in.

The cat flap is propped open to encourage him, but all this has done is attract other cats (he just chased one out I didn't notice come in)

He isn't into catnip (we tried it on the scratching post)

How do I convince him to go out?

Sorry for length!

We have two cats both rescue (mother & son) he goes out but only in summer because that's all he likes and she does not go out at all other then to sit on the balcony, she will not go out the front door at all.
We have the same thing about the scratching too, they don't like scratching posts but they do like carpet and plain wood (we found this out in the new door frameAngry) so I put down a carpet mat (£land or carpet sample) and my DP made a wood only scratching post to stand on it by the door so there can scratch that. Every time they go to scratch they got put there and now they go there on there own. Smile Plus we now cut there nails to which helps a lot.

I wouldn't worry to much about him not wanting to go out.

A cat we used to have didn't go out - well, she'd go out if it was a) sunny and b) you were with her. She was a bit dim though.

We have a carpet off cut by the door he goes for, maybe I could cut it up and place bits strategically around the house.

He definately gets the catflap though. I just turfed him out to see if he would work out how to get back in again and he was back in less than a minute!

Maybe he will go out more when it's warm (hopefully)

Hmm, not sure about clipping his claws, but will definately consider it if he doesn't get his act together about scratching the carpet.

Good to know he's not the only one though! I wonder if it's a rescue thing, he just doesn't want to stray far from his dinner us.
