Staying warm / mattress / DofE tips?

Hello, dd is signed up for DofE Silver and I must admit I'm a tiny bit freaked out (already!). We don't live in the UK so the plan is to combine the practice and actual walks back-to-back in England to save on travel costs. I think they'll get a day or 2 between to recover (but she won't be home, so couldn't restock / pick up other items). She did Bronze but struggled (with food, navigation, blisters, team mates being lazy and not doing their parts or bringing the food they were supposed too...) so the idea of her doing two expeditions in a week in a different country isn't great!

Anyway, can anyone recommend

  1. Top purchases?
  2. If I buy a better mattress do I get a highly portable one (link below), or too much chance of it popping and I need a SIM or do I need a more expensive insulated one? Expedition is April. Thanks.
  3. Oh, and walking boots: she chose a pair of average £ boots which seemed the most comfortable but they haven't worn in fantastically. I've put new (Aldi) innersoles in as they felt very thin after a couple of good hikes. She still doesn't find them comfortable after longer walks (fine for shorter). Do I get better innersoles or try another pair of boots?

Possible mattress

Thanks 😊

Her feet need to be comfortable

Can't help much as really you need a trusted retailer - I'd recommend Cotswolds on the UK - you need to try - I could never recommend online walking boots

Another one here to say never buy walking bpots online having not tried them on in store (or atleast be prepared to return a lot of boots)

I did buy 4 pairs from Amazon, including pricier ones. I liked the merrel ones but they were very contoured inside.

Unfortunately we don't live in England, limited shopping here.

If the consensus is that better innersoles won't cut it, I'll have to come up with a cunning plan <scratches chin>
