Walking boots - how should they fit?

Just bought some in a size 5 (My correct size) and they fit fine just with normal (not thick) socks. The 6 were too big even with an insole in and would have needed very thick socks to fit. Have I bought the right size do you think?

Important things are that, in whatever socks you want to wear them with, your heel doesn't lift up inside the boot when you're walking uphill, and toes don't touch the front when walking downhill. If those things are happening, adjusting the way they're laced up might help. If you can't solve the problem that way you probably need either a different size or a different brand (the fit can vary quite a bit).

I usually wear mine indoors for a day or so just to make sure.

Thank you both. Boots have just had their maiden voyage up hill and down Dale on quite rough moorland tracks with 2 pairs of thin socks and I'm happy to report that they are perfect Grin
