British walks

Has anyone have any good recommendations for easy to follow books on guided walks around Britain? Feel inspired by Julia Branbury TV series, but looking at reviews for her book it doesn't include maps. And I need clear instructions or else I will get lost at the first point.

I have always found walking books to be really annoying as they are very wordy and you spend the whole walk reading.

I prefer just to buy a map of the area and walk from that. Or at the least read the walk book alongside a map the night before and then just take the map out with you.

Thank you heron, that does make sense. Any tips on how to use maps coherently without getting frustrated? Or would google map be useful? Not often in areas with little or no directions I am a townie at best and might find rural walking a little unusual

Try Pathfinder Guides. They're made by the OS, so the maps are by them. The have about 28 walks covering an area like The South Downs, or Northern Snowdonia.

I'd also recommend getting Viewranger for a GPS phone. You can download OS maps of your walk and it will tell you exactly where you are.

Whereabouts in the country are you? Lots to do in the Lake District. Old man of conniston is my favourite!

I do what heron does. The books are handy to fund different areas but I always plan it in a map too.

We love the cicerone books, although have different authors or styles, most have maps in with the text. I'm currently working my way through the cicerone south lakes short walks book.
