Anyone been "wild camping" in Scotland

We're off in a defender explorer in aug and planning on going to the west of Scotland/highlands. Just wondering where you went and how you got on

There is a 'right to roam' in Scotland though you may see private or no camping signs to discourage folk. Also worth bearing in mind the stalking season. No point in pissing off the local hunting, shooting brigade (or get a load of buckshot us your ass).

Anyway, apart from that, as long as you leave a place as you find it, you shouldn't have too much hassle. I have wild camped in Glen Etive (near Glen Coe), Glen Nevis and the entire length of the outer hebrides. The further wet and north you go, the easier it should be.

Arisaig, Ardnamurchan, Mull also fabulous. Down the Mull of Kintyre too.

Take a midge net though. I kid you not. These little blighters have sent the hairiest and toughest of men run scurrying back home.

Plenty places to "wild camp", some not so easy if you want to be close to your car. There's also some really nice campsites which are cheap/free. Where exactly are you planning to go and what are you wanting to do while you're there and I'll give you a better idea of good locations. I agree with what previous poster said about the midgies - they can be awful and are the main reason we tend to get a cottage in the summer and only camp in spring and autumn when the midgies aren't as bad. Wishbone huts like the ones in Applecross are a good compromise.

DP and I went wild camping in June.

You can legally camp anywhere in Scotland so we just found nice ish spots not too far from the car and went there.

There were a couple of still dry nights when the midges were awful. One night we ended up in the car to escape, which with a 6 foot 8 DP and me in a Corsa was not fun! We had nets, sprays, a fsmokey fire - everything but nothing worked and I was eaten alive.

We have been a few times. Sometimes we camped near a pub or similar and asked politely if we could use their facilities.

Wild camping is restricted round some places of Loch Lomond so look out for that.

Campbeltown is lovely and macrihannesh too.
