Family canoes

We have just moved to the coast and are keen to get ourselves out on the water (very calm estuary). We are two adults and three kids aged 6, 4 and 1. I have seen an ad locally for an Old Town Discovery 158 which looks like a great family canoe. Reviews seem to suggest two adults and two kids will fit in. The 6yo is v keen on having something of his own as he really enjoyed going out with friends in a kayak recently. Any advice from experience family canoeists please?

You should fit yourselves & all the kids in at the ages they currently are - you'll need Lifejackets for the kids (not buoyancy aids) and either Lifejackets or Buoyancy Aids for yourselves. Also - canoes are quite high sided & catch the wind, so be careful in the estuary!

The 6 YO could possibly paddle a small kayak of his own (Pyranha Rebel, Dagger Dynamo etc.) - I'd definitely recommend looking for a canoe/kayak club near you (there will be one) and they'll be able to coach and advise you.

Sorry for the novel - only meant to be a short post....
