Decided to hoick a load of weed out of our pond, as the poor old fish were getting rather cramped. DS and I found baby newts (still with the feathery gills), dragonfly nymphs, saucer bugs the size of 2p pieces, a frog which made me squeal because it jumped unexpectedly onto my arm, and more water boatmen than you could shake a stick at. Plus, on a willowherb next to the pond, a giant brown caterpillar the size of my finger. Turns out it's an elephant hawk moth larva; poor bugger fell into the pond after I accidentally brushed its plant Blush I fished it out and put it back (after bending its willowherb away from the water); last I saw it was munching happily again.

Anyone else had any close encounters with creatures today?

My pond needs a good clear out, the pond weeds have gone bonkers this year.

I had a visit from a hummingbird hawkmoth on Saturday - I was ridiculously excited, as I hadn't seen one for ages!
