Penknives

I try to encourage my children to play outside as much as possible and take an interest in nature, and they are both quite enthusiastic. I am thinking of buying my elder son (nearly 9) a little multi tool with bottle opener, penknife etc for den building and camping. I wouldn't let him take it to school or anything! Would other people let their child have a penknife at this age? As children my brothers and I did.

My DS had a penknife for his 8th birthday. I knew him to be sensible enough, and bought an Opinel knife which are good because they have a collar which locks the blade so they can't snap the blade on their fingers when whittling sticks. Opinel also do good sharp knives with a rounded end.

Anyway, you have probably done it by now! Grin
