Dog has diarrhoea with mucus and blood

Yesterday morning I woke up and my dogs room was covered in diarrhoea. I think there was a bit of sick, but not sure. It looked like sick.

This morning I have woken up to the same thing, but this time there is mucus and some blobs of blood and what looks like some watery blood in the stools.

My dog seems otherwise and happy, and is eating and drinking OK.

Obviously I am going to make an appointment at the vet, but I am working today and hopefully my DH can get an appointment today or ASAP.

Has anyone else had this. Obviously I love my dog to bits and am panicking.

My dog had this as a puppy and it was colitis. Took a bit of trial and error but once we found the right food he was 100% fine and never had a reoccurrence.

Could be something they’ve eaten, or a stomach bug like gastroenteritis. The jelly type stuff is normal when they’ve got diarrhoea. The blood not so much, which is definitely worth a trip to the vet, I think this can mean an inflamed intestine, and I know colitis can also cause a dog to have blood in their poo.

It’s a good sign they’re eating and drinking, but - and of course visit a vet for actual medical advice - if it were my dog I’d not be feeding them whilst they’re actively being ill.

good luck at the vets, hope your dog is on the mend soon

sounds like colitis-probably something he’s eaten.
The vet will probably just recommend you feed fish & rice and give some probiotics but worth a visit.

Hi. Sounds like textbook collitis. Our dog's was linked to food. We've had it under control 3-4y but he's just had an unexplained flare up. It can cause other issues- we had pancreatitis at one point. So he might need painkillers, steroids, antibiotics etc. The causes can be numerous. It's not ideal and needs exploring, but don't panic about the blood. It might be a one off but you don't want him to decline as it's painful and can get worse. Xx

Thank you. I am a bit upset.

Currently working my notice at a really shitty job, was lying in bed thinking about how I am going to spend more time with my dog on walks and cuddles when I finish next week, and am now cleaning up his bloody poo. My mind went from A-Z.

Hopefully we can get him checked out today.

He's my best mate

The only thing different I can see that he has eaten is I bought him some Sprats as a treat.

It’s textbook colitis, I’m sure the vet will give him some pro kaolin paste to take for a few days and will clear it up. Could be he’s sensitive to the sprats. FYI you can get pro kaolin paste over the counter and I used to keep some in the cupboard for minor tummy upsets.

This has happened occasionally with my dog. I actually just buy the probiotic paste off amazon myself now and try that first. Then go to vet if it doesn’t clear it up (it always has though)

Copperoliverbear · 29/09/2026 07:46

Vets straight away gastric or some other form of stomach infection, please take him can affect their stomach forever if not treated early.

OriginalPeanut · 29/09/2026 08:44

In dogs, blood in poo doesn't always mean anything serious. My two have both had similar a couple of times and it's always cleared up in a day or two with a bland diet (mine get white fish and sweet potato) and some prokolin.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 29/09/2026 09:00

Def sounds like colitis. Second the probiotic paste. It took two bouts of this for me to work out our dog can’t eat chicken/poultry.

Our dog had this when she was about 11 - she had us up and down in the night and I was beside myself when I saw the mucus/blood. The vet probably thought I was a crazy lady! She went twice for anti sickness jabs over that weekend and took about 4 days til she was fully better.

You can buy pro-kalin (?) paste from pets at home. It totally sorts our dog out when she has a bad stomach. Lots of water bowls around the house, something bland like chicken and I’m sure your mate will be right as rain.
