Is it the right time to say goodbye to our dog?

Bella is almost 17, a Lhasa Apso so old for her breed even. She had had a rough life and we adopted her at 8 and really didn't expect to have her for more than 8 years but I'm sure now is the time and I have contacted the vet about a home visit next week.
She eats well and likes a stroll but she is frail and increasingly incontinent. She keeps getting stuck as she seems to have forgotten how to back up or turn round. The last few days she has been bumping into things and she walks constantly never sitting or laying down unless fastened in a pen and it is no life for a dog.
I know it's the right thing to do but I am so sad and keep crying. I plan to feed her all her favourite foods and take her to a couple of her favourite spots before we say goodbye. It is the right time isn't it?

I think it is as you say she's pacing and unable to settle. You don't want to wait until there is no good left. Enjoy spoiling her this week and then do her the last kindness you can by letting her go. I gave mine a week of spoiling before the vet trip, I'm pretty sure he thought it was the best week ever and knowing that made my loss easier to bare.

Omg this is so sad to read. How are you OP? It sounds like its time - you are so brave x

Well today is the day. The vet is coming at 10am. I've barely slept but I know it's the right thing for Bella. She has had a lovely week. I cooked her a roast that she had a couple of days, she's had sausage for breakfast and as much ham as she has wanted for treats. We've been to a couple of her favourite spots as well. I've said my goodbye as she woke early today although she is fast asleep again now and wouldn't expect her to wake again before the vet arrives. I'm going to remember the good times we shared and know that I did my very best for her after she had had such a terrible life.

What a happy loved life you have given her @hiredandsqueak and now you are doing the right thing for her. She will be feeling much loved and that’s everything right now - huge hug xx

Sorry to hear this. Our 17 year old border collie was put to sleep earlier this year. We also opted to have the vet come to us and glad we did. You've given Bella a wonderful life and what a lovely last week you've given her. Thinking of you and sending love.

WingnutSOS · 23/09/2026 18:32

Hope you are doing ok @hiredandsqueak xx

I am thank you. It was a calm and peaceful end with her laid on my lap where she was always happiest. I've cried and feel like a huge part is missing as she might have been small but she was mighty. It was a fitting end really for a very much loved dog. I know I did the right thing for her no matter how sad we all feel.

Oh she looks like a right little character, you’ll have many memories to look back on and smile, I’m sure x

Yes, you knew it was the right time.. It's the kindest thing for her.I couldn't bear to do it for our last dog and looking back, we should have been stronger about it because he wasn't having any quality of life. Don't feel bad, she's had a lovely life with you. Sending you hugs x

Edited because I hadn't RTFT
