My beautiful old girl stinks. I can’t describe the smell but it’s dreadful. Not fishy or pooey, just grotesque.
I’ve tried different foods, I bathe her regularly but she still stinks. I took her to be professionally groomed, made no difference at all. Her anal glands are fine, the vet checked, her claws and paws are cleaned after walks and the vets have said they can’t find anything the matter and it’s not her breath.
She does have a fatty lump which again the vet isn’t concerned about but could that be causing the smell?
I’ve found she suits dried food more than wet, wet upsets her stomach. I’ve put her on a hypoallergenic dry food to see if that helped and it made no difference to her at all just my bank account. I have had elderly dogs before but none of them have ever smelt like this. No signs of incontinence or infection, ears are fine.

Anyone with any ideas who can recommend anything please do.

Nope. Ears are perfect. It really is a bloody mystery what is causing the smell. It’s been like this for about a year now

What breed is she?

Switchnow · 11/09/2026 21:58

I have a girl and a boy, similar breeds, short hair. My girl smells fresh most of the time, the boy just stinks a bit more. He recently had allergies and I was giving him Zenrelia. It stopped the itching and also stopped the smell. So I guess his skin is reactive and produces something that smells. Might be worth investigating if it’s an inflammatory issue?

I have no idea. She’s about the size of a spaniel but looks like she has some terrier in there.
She belonged to a neighbour who became too unwell to manage with her anymore so I kept her so she could still visit him. I think he got her from gumtree about 10 years ago.

I’ll definitely ask the vet, I’m visiting with her so frequently at the moment we’re expecting an invite to their Christmas party. I think the smell is coming from her skin, I’ll have this looked at. She’s always itched, but no signs of fleas, she’s wormed regularly and no flaky skin. But something has to be wrong

If she has a skin issue, spraying her with scented products risks making it worse; plus I can't imagine that it would be very pleasant for her, given how much more sensitive dogs' noses are than ours. Get her checked over by the vet first.

Does she have a tail. If not it could be her tail pocket. I have to clean my girls every day. I just use luke warm water and cotton pads

Mooseylooseyloo · 25/09/2026 03:06

I have a french bulldog male exactly the same. It makes me sad as I cant let him on the sofa or anything as he absolutely stinks. He takes zenrelia but it hasn't cured his smell. He stinks the whole house out. Ive found the only way to minimise it is to bath him weekly and wash the dog bed weekly.

She has a tail. No wounds that I can find! It does smell almost like an infection somewhere but as I say vets have thoroughly checked her and nothing! It’s an absolute mystery.

Omg I cant actually belive it. After commenting on this post yesterday today for some reason I decided to smell my dog and his smell has completely disappeared, i mean 100% gone. This dog stank my house out, he had a terrible smell, been that way for about 6 years, hes never been allowed on furniture or upstairs on carpet as he honwstly would stink the whole house. Hes alwsys been itchy, yeasty and stinky and took steroids for his allergies. 2 weeks ago my vet wanted me to try zenrelia, its absolutely cured his smell i could cry i cant believe he actually just smells of nothing.

How often are you bathing the dog? as over washing them strips the oil from the coat and skin and makes them stinkier in my experience, also are you thoroughly drying the dog after a bath as leaving them to air dry makes them smellier than normal.
