Advice on good value food and treats for a whippet puppy

I’m picking up our whippet pup on Tuesday and I’m wondering which brand of food is the best, on a reasonable budget? I’m not 100% what I should and shouldn’t be looking for, although as I gather, grain free seems to be better? I’ll probably invest in some salmon oil to add to his meals too.

I would ask your breeder what the pup is eating. Changing food usually needs to be done slowly as pup could have diarrhea and a pup with diarrhea is not good. Speaking from experience 😁

Your breeder should send the puppy home with food to last a week or so . I bought the same for Muddypup for a month, then gradually changed to my choice as it became obvious he was sensitive to chicken.

It depends whether you want the cordon bleu options or are happy for him to eat normal dog food. I've had working gundogs for forty years and they do well on a mid-priced kibble. Currently Labrador is on Skinners salmon and rice, spaniel on their maintenance (chicken).

Grain free is going through a bit of a fad status but isn't better unless your dog is actually allergic. Many use legumes instead and there is some evidence that this can cause heart issues down the line.
I'd recommend Ava. It's good quality and while not the cheapest, isn't overly expensive either. Pets At Home sell it and it rates well on the dog food quality comparison sites. The fish version is particularly good if your pup has a sensitive stomach (although be aware it's very normal for them to have an upset stomach when they come home as it's incredibly stressful for them).
