Considering a Whippet…..

We are considering getting a whippet puppy and would value advice, suggestions and what to be thinking about, please.

We already have a a dog, she’s a rescue Heinz 57 who’s medium sized. She’s pretty chilled but used to being an only dog. Our 2 DC are 10 and 14. The new puppy will be primarily for the 14 year old who has autism and social anxiety. The aim is that they will undertake most of the training and care (they are DESPERATE for their own dog) with our support and supervision. This child is a huge dog lover and very capable despite their ND,

Whippets have been the lead breed for ages. What do you all think? I’ve had animals all my child and adult life with most of them being rescues so I’m finding the shop rather than adopt a bit hard but would definitely like a puppy for them to train and grow with.

Many thanks!

ive never heard of this book but I'll be buying it now.

It's totally brilliant! The section where the author and his wife sail their narrow boat across the Channel (with Jim the whippet) is hysterical. Plus there are three books in the series.

Thankyou I'm looking forward to reading these.

Hope I have this right but they are not dogs that bark much, if at all, so another plus.

Whippets are obviously the best dogs 😂
One fairly large caution tho is around prey drive. Ours will go absolutely nuts around cats, squirrels, rabbits etc and cannot safely be off the lead if there’s any chance we could run into any of the above! Recall is good otherwise. Can be a bit stressful with neighbours cats - I do worry when one comes into our garden. I know not all whippets are like this and maybe we did something wrong with our training (?) but it feels very genetic with our girl!
but even with this caution I can’t imagine ever getting enough breed (maybe a whippet cross haha!).

A Grippet ?
Whippet cross Greyhound
I believe they are a real thing 😄

I dog sit a friends whippet. She asked if I minded a cuddle in bed occasionally . Honestly having a velvety smooth warm dog snuggled up is thousand times more appealing than my husband in it.
