Sandy beach for dog, train from London?

I want to take my dog to a sandy beach. She loves digging but has never been to the beach and I think she will love it!
We are non drivers and travelling by train, from London (any London station is fine).
Any recommendations for where to go?

Broadstairs, Margate, Camber Sands x

Nowhere in this weather, it will be too hot for her

Thatcannotberight · 14/07/2026 16:30

Only very early or late evening at the moment. The sand is way too hot for dog paws during the day. Also check which beaches are dog friendly. Palm bay Margate is all year round.

No need to take your dog for hours on a train. There's loads of children's play areas with sandpits. Just take your dog to one of those. Just do it early before it gets too hot and there's kids around.

Yes, next time I decide I want a holiday I will instead visit a children’s park and put myself in the sandpit. Perhaps followed by a dip in the pond, that’s probably just like the sea. 🤔🫤

Folks, obviously I’m not going to put my wonderful dog out to sunbathe on a beach lounger in a heatwave. But it’s not going to be this hot for the rest of time!

Thanks for the other suggestions. Margate and Broadstairs both look lovely. I have actually never been to either despite living in London all my life.

Don’t a lot of beaches have a dog ban during summer?

Quizzled · 14/07/2026 17:05

@AuntieDolly It seems to really vary. The ones I’ve looked at, some have a full ban May-September, some have a restriction May-September 10am-6pm but fine outside those times, some have restriction May-December on a lead but other times off lead is fine.

Most beaches ban dogs at this time of year … maybe head towards Devon, I think some of them may be dog friendly.

Very few actually have a ban for the whole beach, most have a ‘not allowed between this area and this area’ but they can go on other parts. We’ve encountered very few places where we can’t take our dog on the beach at all. Quite frankly my dog behaves better on the beach than most people! He’s kept on a lead, doesn’t leave litter every where or play loud music that disrupts everyone and he doesn’t smoke weed near small children!

Walton on the Naze and Frinton on Sea are both lovely sandy beaches, dogs are allowed on both but as I said above, not the full length but it is well signed as to where they are an aren’t allowed. At Frinton they can go near the golf club end and we prefer it down there anyway as it’s quieter and there are toilets at the bottom end. The towns are lovely and most of the ice cream shops sell the doggie ice cream too. We take a beach mat and a parasol for our dog to lie on/under and a water bowl.

@Doone22 Ask an artificial chat bot, over asking for the real experience of real people? Society is doomed.
