I am 'visiting' a puppy tomorrow. Just to look, you understand......🙄
But in the event said puppy came home with me next week, what name would you give a black labrador boy?
Probably won't, cos im just looking....🤪

or Martin

BiteSizedLife · 28/06/2026 04:49

I also know a black lab called Boss

Flicitytricity · 27/06/2026 19:29

There's a yellow lab called Stanley who lives nearby, I talk to him every day😁

I suspect all he says back is
"Got anthing to eat? ANYTHING?"

MummySleepDeprived · 28/06/2026 08:04

Anything but Dino or Bruno. I learned recently having NO in the name confuses them!

He's the only labrador I know who doesn't rummage in my pockets for treats - he politely turns his head away if offered😲
He's still the size of a Shetland pony in girth though😆

Are you taking cash for the deposit? Ask me how I know.

Bugger. In the highly unlikely event that I go further than just looking, I had planned a bank tfr.
Better check - thank you!

Oh, and, go on, how do you know???

I just went to look at 7 weeks, with £500 in my bag ( didnt even know what the deposit might be ). It wasn't that much, but I came home with a receipt and an appointment to collect her the next week.
I'd sat with my pup asleep on my lap for over an hour while I chatted with the breeder. I fell in love. 😁
Rather naively, I once went to look at 10 week old puppies, absolutely NOT getting one.
We had to stop on the way home to buy a collar and lead and everything else you need for a puppy.

Probably sheer luck he was an excellent and healthy dog, and I'd never do that again.

MostLikelyToLeave · 28/06/2026 08:28

Be careful. Good breeders or an even just a nice family who have had a litter, will have long waiting lists, so would be very unlikely to have a puppy available to leave next week. Puppy farms/bad breeder are more likely to have dogs available at short notice.

Good people breeders wouldn’t have let a puppy go to someone who wasn’t prepared for the dog. I’m sure the pup got lucky with you, but good breeders make sure that the people they home dogs to are really ready for a dog. There are so many shit people breeding dogs for money who don’t really care about where the dogs end up. 😞

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 28/06/2026 08:32

We lost the best black lab this time last year and he was called Billy 💔.

Absolutely, I was very naive and trusting. Pup had a lovely life with us for 14 years, even came on holiday with us.
I think I did the research and got things right this time.

Absolutely this. I didn't want to comment before as I already seem to be the one sounding the warning sirens over bad breeding, so I am glad someone else said something. I mean, it's entirely possible it's a genuine breeder who isn't dodgy as hell and the puppy has, by chance, become re-available.

And I assume OP has done her due diligence over health conditions and behavioural issues as a result of bad breeding, so she will be equipped to deal with it.

(very much being hopeful here - but with a heavy degree of scepticism given how many people recently have posted about visiting a puppy or they're looking at a breeder and linked the breed and it turns out it's a puppy farm).

BiteSizedLife · 28/06/2026 10:52

I too just went to look at a 12 week old.

Just looking. First time ever seeing any puppies or breeders. Having never ever had a dog or thought I could ever have one. My friend came with me and brought her dog car carrier thing - i told her we didnt need it because we were just looking. Initial puppy enquiries you see. Probably wont get this one.

Except it wasnt just looking was it!

This is awful, but we had to stop at pets at home on the way home. I walked in with this little puppy and said to the store assistant "I just need everything."

I got lucky, but I was def naive and dumb!

I should really have already covered this, but yes, there are no problems here.
I know the breeder, had my last two dogs from her, dad is a working Lab. Fabulous hip scores, excellent all rounder healthwise.
Mum is a pet dog, again, fully healthchecked and in gorgeous condition.
There is a waiting list, but I hit lucky by contacting her to say I might be needing to sign up for a future litter at the same time as this pups potential owners pulled out due to finances.

I didn't have to pay a deposit either 😁

@Flicitytricity In which case, best of luck to you! Sorry we're such a skeptical bunch (literally the last 8-10 posts about 'new puppies' have all been puppy farmers or worse...). Hope the visit went well ❤
