Our six month lab seems able to pick up or knock over every water bowl we have tried. Does anyone have a tried and tested recommendations please.

We have a large (8 inch diameter and 4.5 inch tall) solid and heavy earthenware water bowl. None of our dogs ever have managed to tip it over and it keeps the water cool.

Thanks for your reply, sadly she’s smashed one of these after managing to empty it all over the floor then start shoving it round the kitchen smashing it off one of the cupboards! Maybe a cast iron pot is the only answer 😆

Sorry, don't know but came on to commiserate as water bowls seem to hold several gallons of water when spilled!

Have you tried one with a non-slip mat underneath it? Something like the 'sticky' rubber mats available for under food bowls for special needs use.

Ours is on a non-slip surface (a rubber backed mat on top of a fixed carpet), so it can't be pushed around at all, the combination of the weight (about 4+kg) and the non slip, keeps it in place despite mad dog crashing into it when she's zooming.

If this fails I'd look for the heaviest bowl (including water volume) I could find and secure it to the floor with heavy duty velcro, releasable cable ties attached to a wall, inside a wooden box secured to wall/floor, or something along those lines.

Good luck, at least you'll never be bored with your mad dog!

I’ve added an image but not yet uploaded. I’ve recently started using this bowl. Elevated so good for posture. My GSD used to get so much water on the floor! Now there is virtually none.
It is lightweight but so far no problems. I don’t use the feeding bowl as it’s a bit small but it does also come with a slow feed insert which is good for greedy labs erm dogs I mean.

I have a very heavy old ceramic loaf-shaped pate dish, it’s on a non slip mat and it’s survived 15 years so far! I found it in a charity shop, might be worth looking for something similar.

We've got this one https://amzn.eu/d/00LTW30b

We've even taken it in the car without emptying and haven't spilled a drop. Even if you knock it, the lip around the edge and the floating disk thing stops water slopping over the top. The downside is that it's a bit annoying to take apart to wash.

At 6 months old is the perfect age to train the dog not to grab / push / move the bowl. He would get it in maximum 1 week.Labs are smart.

drivinmecrazy · 28/02/2026 11:50

Our dog solved this problem himself.
he hasn’t broken any bowls but he’s a dribbler in extremis!
about a year ago he decided he prefers the tap so that’s how he gets his water, he has no water bowl now 😂
only really works because he can reach the tap and can turn it on himself.
off, not so much
