Must greyhounds have space for zoomies?

I've previously had a greyhound who enjoyed the occasional zoom around the garden. But generally she liked lazing around - not keen on walks and in secure fields, off lead, would just stand by my side and not participate.

I'm now looking to adopt a rescue dog and considering a female greyhound. However the house I now live in doesn't have a large garden, so not suitable for zoomies and she would be on lead when out mostly as no suitable open spaces.

Do greyhounds need to do zoomies or could they cope hapily without?

Ours manages fine, we occasionally hire a field for them to run around but after 2 minutes they're tired anyway and just rest!

Ours has access to a garden but does most of her zoomies indoors in tiny spaces 😂

My 10yo adopted grey gets the zoomies occasionally, we have a small garden and it’s more than enough for him. They’re a lazy breed, couple of walks a day and some enrichment will be enough - small spaces for zoomies are an added bonus!

I think it does depend how old they are. For an older dog it’s fine, but a young greyhound really does love to run and it would be said if they didn’t have the opportunity.

I have two greyhounds and a tiny garden. Mine are very active but I let them off in our village park. It’s away from roads and they have their regular dog friends down there. If they didn’t get to run around fairly regularly they would zoomie in my house. They do this sometimes anyway and it’s carnage - running upstairs, jumping on the bed, running back down, jumping on the sofas. Usually when I’m mid video call at work so I can’t stop them!

Whenever we go to greyhound meetups it’s clear I have the crazy dogs, though, all the others look really sedate!

They do sleep for ages once they’ve had their bursts, though.

I know someone who runs a regional greyhound rescue charity. He usually has about 5 at any one time 🤣. He has a private well fenced 2 acre field which he lets them into everyday. He told me it’s not absolutely essential and he wouldn’t rule out a home if they weren’t able to offer some sort of area to let them run around in but they do enjoy it.
