Annoyed at the vets - dog now has to be put under twice

I’ve taken my dog to a specialist for an ongoing issue he has. Really he is getting the gold standard treatment. And we are paying a lot for it. Even with insurance it’s expensive.

He went in for scans. And we then added on dental cleaning as he was already under.

At 7pm I get a phone call. I asked “is he ok? Everything go to plan?” The vet said “yes, it went to plan but….”.

Come to find out the only thing he’s had done are his teeth which were only supposed to be an added extra. He has to go back in for the images as there was a technical issue.

Im VERY annoyed. I wished they had rung and told me. I would never put my senior dog under twice. It really takes 3 or 4 days to recover

We have paid tos surgery thousands. And I’m really unhappy. I would have had no issue going back to collect him and booked in for another day.

for the amount we pay I would have hoped for some communication. I get machines break down. I would’ve not been in the least bit angry with that.

He's 10 years old.

Although this isn’t great, I read it that the technical issue probably happened while he was under and the were attempting to scan. In which case, they really couldn’t do anything about it and took the opportunity to do the other bit while they had him so as not to waste operating room time.

i assume you won’t be paying for another set of general anaesthetic and after care etc if the fault was their end?

I would be annoyed too. They should have called you when they knew they wouldn't be able to do the scan. Sounds like poor communication.
Does the scan require sedation? Is it a CT? Most animals can tolerate conscious ultrasounds.
My cat had a dental recently and it took her a good few days to get over the effects the anaesthetic so I can see why you're annoyed.

No the machines were broken prior to my dog even being put under. It didn’t happen mid procedure. It was entirely avoidable. Which is the bit that annoys me.

he was given local. He takes a few days to recover. This was his second time being under. We shared that he responds quite poorly as he does take longer than the standard 24 hours to bounce back. He’s out of it for 2/3 days. it’s awful to see him like that tbh.

I would never put him under just for a nice to have. He has some quite serious issues we are investigating.

I really would hope for better communication from people who like to position themselves at being the best in the business.

I would be seriously pissed off with them for that. It would be reasonable if the machine broke once he was sedated. But to go ahead, knowing it was broken is inexcusable. I certainly wouldn't be paying for two sedation. I'm sorry your poor dog has to go through it again.

Then yes, this is terrible and I would be totally pissed off and want to speak to the manager/partner about it!

Two sedations, one unnecessarily is really poor form. And again, I hope they wont be charging you for one of them!

Hope your poor dog is recovering ok
