Present suggestions for new puppy owners

My son and his partner are getting their first puppy soon and I thought it would be nice to get something for them, rather than the puppy.

It could be something practical or something fun - I’ve taken on grown up dogs in the past but never a puppy so don’t have a clue!

Long socks (like skiing socks) so they can tuck their trouser legs in to prevent a puppy hanging off them
An umbrella for standing in the garden at 2am in the pissing rain waiting a wee
Matching thermos cups for walks together?! This one isn't me but I see people with them 😂

Honestly - an amazon voucher.

The amount of things as new puppy owner that you need to see if they work out through trial and error.... costs a fortune.

ETA - mountain warehouse voucher, too!

A homemade “puppy sitting” voucher so they can have a night off. Which they will crave sooner than they think (if anything like me).

Empty 1l Coke, or diet Coke if you prefer, bottle with the lid pulled off (and responsibly disposed of). Hours of endless and noisy fun for all the family.

A bit like getting your grandchild a drum kit 😁

What type of puppy are they getting as that might help people with their suggestions. My dd recently got a Labrador and it's amazing how much he has grown, to the point they are on their second, larger crate and a larger bed for him. I bought him a rope snake from B&M and it is one of his favourite toys - he has destroyed all the 'soft' toys he was bought.

Crocs to wear around the house. Invaluable when my girl was a pup and loved the “play” with our toes and her mouth!

A really nice throw for the sofa that can be in situ most of the time and rapidly removed before guests so they avoid the worst of dog hair. Also useful if dog is ill because it can be chucked straight in washing machine. I got a gorgeous washable, reversible one from M&S.

A tablet cutter so kibble can be split in two to double the amount available for treats/training.

A head torch for picking up poo in the dark.

MagpiePi · 11/12/2025 09:48

Loving all these, thanks!

It is a miniature daschund.

Gin - for when the puppy drives them to drink (looking at my dog and remembering his puppy days!)

CMOTDibbler · 11/12/2025 09:53

A dicky bag to carry poo around on walks where there aren’t very frequent bins

A long-line lead
