Dog sitting gone wrong..

Friend of a friend needed a sitter - we’ve had many before but by god this one is hard work. He’s an English bull terrier and by far the worst dog I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. First and foremost he stinks! I feel like burning the house down the smell is everywhere.. I was on a telephone call earlier left the lounge for half hour tops, he’s ripped up every cushion I own on the sofa. He’s humped everything 🙄 we can’t eat without him barking and barking for food at the table and has been and absolute arse from the minute he got here. To top it all we can’t walk him anywhere.. reactive to cars, cats, other dogs .. none of this was ever said and the owner has messaged to say he’s staying away longer than expected.. should have been back Sunday night but now not back until Tuesday I could cry!! 😭 one more night.. is as much as I can take. Lessons have been learned this weekend..

I have taken the dog to my friend and made it crystal clear I’m not going to be doing this again. Owner has decided to stay another couple of nights away.. I’ve spent the day cleaning my stinking house. That poor dog.. honestly can’t fathom why people get dogs and then are useless at training them and looking after them.

I hope your friend was apologetic, sounds like the dog owner has decided to abandon smelly dog, how awful.

Do you think they’ve just abandoned the dog? Who just keeps staying away longer than expected? At least you’ve got rid of it now, it’s your friends problem 🤣

Apparently the dog is very much loved 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s gone now along with my throws / cushions and lounge rug! Sofa will be cleaned tomorrow as well as the car 😫 I’ve been to Sainsbury’s and bought a whole host of air fresheners.. lesson learned

If you ever want some doggy company …you could invite this stinking, chewing, barking lump of a hooligan 😂😂😂😂😂

Not being paid and have never taken money to help out friends who need a sitter. This time round has been a learning curve as to why we only look after dogs we know well and know how to behave. We have one dog that comes to us often as their owner travels for work - he basically has two homes and we love him to bits. I should have known better than to take on a dog I knew very little about who was ‘stuck’ for a sitter - that’s always a sign people won’t have the dog for a reason. One more night.. that’s all I keep telling myself 😆

Hi @icantgetnosheep1
There seem to be a few issues here - you are giving and the friend of a friend is a taker. They have used your kindness against you.

Poor dog and poor you. If the dog was "much loved", the owner would spend on training for their dog to become less reactive, rsther thsn extended holiday (without knowing you are able or willing to extend your initial agreement to pet sit).

Sadly you have learned the hard way that people can and do take advantage. It had cost you in a number of ways and have changed your position on the pets you will accept.

Enjoy your time with your little regular visitor and I hope.you get your home back as it was before this experience

Send the cheeky fucker the bill for replacing your rug cushions etc!!! Copy your friend in so they know what is happening too

The CF only turned up at my house yesterday with the dog .. I didn’t answer the door. Numerous calls later that evening - I didn’t answer. Trying to put me on the spot no doubt to take the dog for the weekend again 🙄 not falling for that!

did you message them and say how out of order they were to extend the stay without your acceptance?

please tell me you did….

VickyEadieofThigh · 12/10/2025 12:45

The CF was ALWAYS going to be away for that long - they lied about it because you would probably not have agreed otherwise.

Please tell me you've told this person straight?

I had something similar happen once when a friend asked me to have her friend's cockapoo, along with her own three small dogs, so they could have a girls week in the sun together.

On paper, a delightful dog but he piddled up anything and everything like a leaking tap. Furniture, laundry basket, car tyres, door jambs, table legs, dog baskets, visitors' legs...

It was only on their return that my friend admitted she knew the dog was completely uneducated and the owner kept her own home in a decent condition by having baby gates at every single door in her house. The dog was physically restrained but had no training or manners whatever.

Foolish and very shortsighted as I then allowed the friendship to fizzle out which meant she lost my sitting services for her own 3 small dogs.
