8-year-old cavachon pooping in house

Hi, we re-homed our beautiful cavachon in 2020 when she was three years old.

She has been fully house trained ever since.

However, over the past fortnight or so she has started to poop in her sleep (I assume her sleep as it's on the bed when we awake) as well as pooping around the house.

She has always scraped or stood at the door to get out and is always made to go out before bed time whether it's raining or not and whether she wants to or not.

She sleeps at the bottom of my bed (bad habit, don't start it) so I'd hear her if she looked out at night, she never does.

This morning there was a small poop on top of the bed covers. I let both dogs outside and she came in and 5 mins later I found another deposit on the bedroom floor and dd (adult) shouted across that she'd left one in her bedroom too. She had already been let outside!

Another thing, her eyes sometimes go like they're glazed over, she has brown eyes but they go a blue colour?

I am going to call the vet when they open but wondered if anyone else had experienced similar or had any idea what it might be?

Thanks

It could be dementia though 8 is very young - maybe seizures? I hope you all get to the bottom of it.

Morning @scoopoftheday , I just wondered, given that you got your girl when she was already an adult, was she definitely only 3 when you got her? Because as @warmapplepies says, it could be the start of a cognitive decline but she's a bit young for that.

Also I noticed that you said that she's "made to go out at night" - does someone go with her to make sure she does a poo? As the weather gets colder and it's dark at night, I wonder if she's just going out for a "pretend poo" 😂. I have one who is the absolute master of the "pretend pee pee", but luckily I can spot a chancer. Dogs eh?! 😍

On the subject of the bluey bit you're seeing on her eyes, Google "lenticular sclerosis in dogs" and see if that's what it looks like. It's a natural part of the aging process, but unlike cataracts it doesn't cause significant sight loss.

Sorry but to me it sounds like epilepsy.
We had an epileptic dog and he lost bowel and bladder control during a seizure.

Hopefully your vets can assess and if it does turn out to be fits of some sort, they can start her on medication.

Definitely a vet visit and confine on a night crapping on beds and around the house is disgusting

In the circumstances, that comment is neither necessary nor helpful.

Do you feel better after posting that?

Hi all, thanks to those who offered advice.

I'm still not very further forward.

Vet did her bloods, they're all good, have to take her back for an xray as she thinks she has arthritis in her back hips (I don't understand how this could lead to pooping?) But he wants to start her on an anti inflammatory and go from there.

@CarrieMoonbeams good point, we have big glass doors i watch them from and though it looks to me like she's going, maybe she isn't??

If the arthritis means it hurts her to crouch, then if could be that she's holding it and pooping in her sleep or when she's relaxed?

We had a cat who pooed in weird places when he had arthritis.

CarrieMoonbeams · 30/09/2025 18:56

@scoopoftheday it would be funny if you had a pretend pooper wouldn't it?! You'll have to brave the dark tonight and run out in your jammies with a torch 😂

Interesting about the arthritis, and as @warmapplepies says, if your wee dog is struggling to crouch properly, it might be that she's not totally empty when she goes to bed. What a shame. Hopefully the medication helps.

Hi @scoopoftheday , just checking in, how is your wee dog doing?
