Remind me why I don’t want a puppy

My very much loved dog died 2 years ago (old age) I was heartbroken. Agreed that we wouldn’t get another dog as our children are now (just!) adults and we don’t want to have the tie a dog brings.

I was absolutely fine with that plan until a friend told me her dog is expecting and will offer us first refusal on a puppy if we want one. It’s an exactly the type of dog I would choose and I love the mum to bits.

Adult kids are saying they would help out - they were brilliant with our last dog.

Now I want another dog 😁 I think I might have some rose tinted glasses on though as I loved my dog so much and have tried to forget the time she ate through a wall 😂

Please remind me of the harder side to having a puppy/dog.

Do you want responsibility for a new child who never gets beyond toddler stage for the next12-16 years?
Every time I want a dog, I think of the travelling DH and I plan to do now DC are adults. I'd hate to keep putting a dog into kennels while we go away. That stops me.

"Cockerpoos are known to be very difficult dogs with lots of the worst traits and quirks of both breeds rolled into one. Loving and cute yes but also high energy, needy, stubborn and very very hard work. So many dogs are getting handed in to rescue are because of affordability or behavioural problems"

It's so strange because this is what I've heard for years but it's just not my experience at all! I've so many various friends (whom I visit/stay over with a lot) with cockerpoos (one of them has 5! Yes, FIVE!) and in all of the cases they are all very chilled, balanced stable dogs, who respond desirably to various different environments and stimuli. The only trending problem I've noticed is fussy eating.

Now Jack Russels on the other hand... 😩

A cockapoo went for my poodle at the park today. The owner apologised, he said his four year old dog has been getting steadily more aggressive with other dogs. He said it went for a placid old Labrador earlier. I asked him if his dog was good with people, he replied that it had bitten him and his partner and he is worried it might bite one of his grandchildren.

Good God. He needs to get rid of that dog.

We’ve got a cockerpoo, she’s 5. She’s a lovely little dog, we hadn’t had dogs as adults, got her in our 50s. She doesn’t have separation anxiety. Absolutely love her to bits, we should have got a dog years ago. She’s transformed our life. But we probably won’t get another one as we want to travel in retirement and she’s only used to being left with the in laws who are getting on now and can only really cope with her for a week these days. They had her for 3 weeks a couple of years ago but couldn’t do that now. I think we’ll be too old to have another one once we’ve finished travelling. We also live near a,axing countryside for dogs now…but are thinking of relocating to a city once we’ve finished travelling retire…and I’m not sure walking dogs round the streets and city parks is the same as watching them run free on beaches and hills.
