Free standing solid barrier for bottom of stairs

Looking for a barrier for the bottom (not top) of the stairs to block the dog from coming downstairs and getting out the front door (yeah appreciate usually other way around!). Something solid that can't be knocked over or moved - anyone any recommendations? Rather not put a gate up. Thanks

A baby gate would be my 1st suggestion but as you dint want that would a very sturdy fireguard work?

I think it's going to be very difficult to find something freestanding that's solid and sturdy enough to truly stop a dog (especially if it's picked up speed coming downstairs). Unless you've gotten a chihuahua, but then I'd be worried about them getting round the side...

Are you not wanting a gate because of having to fix it to a wall? If so, have a look at baby gates which work by pressure. If you're less worried about attaching stuff to the walls, you can get dog gates that are fixed to the wall but come off fairly easily (leaving the fitting in the wall) if you need wider access eg for bulky deliveries.
