Hello

I wondered whether anyone had any views about dogs v bitches and whether there are particular personality traits you'd associate with each sex, or is it just random? We are thinking of a bitch because they tend to be smaller but is there anything I'm missing? We would be having her spayed.

Typically, bitches are smaller. But what I would say is that even within litters, size of pups - even of the same gender - can vary massively and the pup that is the smallest when you view them may not necessarily stay that way. Likewise, parents that are on the small side of breed standard may produce larger pups.

Some people will say that bitches are more loyal or protective, or that boys are more affectionate but, ultimately, a dog is an individual as humans are. As with size, personality will vary massively within litters. However, by 6 weeks a good breeder will be able to advise on the most appropriate pup in terms of personality (some, like me, even match pups to owners based off personality and the requirements of the owner).

The most important thing to consider is what the breed as a whole is like - both the good and the bad. Yes, you can hope to get a pup that's small and female and affectionate and loyal but you could end up with a gigantic nitwit who would abandon you for a quick pat and a chicken wing.
