Anyone else's dog reject dog beds?

She hates them. There's no try at home before you buy either so it's expensive trial and error.

She gladly accepts an assortment of blankets chucked on the floor, though....

...but it feels like neglect when I'm like "oh yeah that's her bed" (points to a blanket on the floor in the corner 😭)

I have never, ever, over 67 years, found a dog that would sleep in or on a dog bed. All mine seem to treat the "dog bed" as the area they aren't allowed in!

Iloveeverycat · 02/02/2025 19:53

Cats are like that too.

Justwingingit2005 · 02/02/2025 19:54

My dog was a rescue. He sleeps on the sofa. We got him a bed which he often drags into the sun during the day but never sleeps in it at night.
His last owner (cruelty case) had him sleeping on a concrete floor!

Whatabouthow · 02/02/2025 19:55

Mine don't like anything too soft or bean bag like (I think because it feels unstable) or waterproof as the noise is odd. They do like mattress beds and the raised hammock type beds though (which are also cooler I think).

scrivette · 02/02/2025 19:55

Blankets on the floor here too - I ended up using the dog bed as a place to put all the toys and blankets during the day.

😂That's definitely how my current GR sees things!
However, my old Greyhound girl was the flipping Princess and the Pea of the dog bed world. Vaaaiiry plush and expensive beds for madam!

Bupster · 02/02/2025 20:12

My dog has four beds of his own, two enormous ex-sofa cushions for his sole use, a crate with a mattress, a travel crate upstairs, is allowed on the actual sofa, and the actual bed, and the sofa bed, and is currently napping on the floor with his head on my foot 🙄

MrsJHernandez · 02/02/2025 20:15

My 6 year old dog refused 3 or 4 beds that I bought for her, including an expensive soft and comfy memory foam one. Then when we got a puppy last year and bought her a bed, the older one took up residence in it immediately and never left! So I had to buy another one.

We've got 4 beds now! One each for downstairs and upstairs! But they mostly use the sofa downstairs because we're too soft on them.

Before the new puppy, the older one slept on a folded up old duvet next to our bed. I just used old covers for it and change it when it needs washing. Maybe your doggy might like that "bed" option instead? Bit cosier and softer.

Buildingthefuture · 02/02/2025 20:17

Have you tried donut beds? My lot love them (but still prefer the couch 🤣)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/02/2025 20:20

Yep, we bought ours a beautiful joules cushion which she refuses to sit on and if we get it out she'll drag it out of the room . The only time she's ever sat on it was when my brothers dog was round and he was sniffing around it. She has 2 ratty old blankets in her bed/crate - I hung them out on the line to air this weekend and she cried at the window until they were brought back in.

Wigtopia · 02/02/2025 20:20

Ours is a blankets on the floor kinda girl or “her” sofa. But occasionally she will choose the hard floor next to her blankets 🤔

ForRubyRobin · 02/02/2025 20:23

Our Labrador loved his beds. He had one in the living room and another in his sleeping area. He did also like the basic doormat in the utility room at times as well. However our cockerpoo will not entertain them at all. She prefers wherever I am sitting until I move, then she is up and following me until I sit down again.

AcquadiP · 02/02/2025 20:29

My dog is like this. I've bought her a couple of "plush", faux fur, warm dog beds. One is currently on the end of my sofa (which she uses), the other she ignores. I don't like her to be in drafts so I gave her a plastic bed, put in a waterproof foam bed and a blanket on top of that. She uses that a lot. At the moment, though, she's flat out on the floor!

BasiliskStare · 02/02/2025 20:33

Here - Basilisk dog will sleep on a blanket on the floor but not a "proper" dog bed. I'm OK with that as blankets easier to wash.

( Whispers - I should say he sleeps on our bed at night ) 😊

Boxingshibes · 02/02/2025 20:35

I feel bad. Mine have no beds they sleep on the carpet or sofa. Usually the sofas when we go to bed. Often sleeping on my bed. We sometimes end up on the floor so we don't have to move them. V spoilt dogs. Cats are just as bad.

caringcarer · 02/02/2025 21:51

Our 2 dogs have lovely beds of their own but prefer DH's chair. 🤣

Florally · 02/02/2025 21:54

Mine just eat them

I'm in 'dog circles'- and the aldi beds are incredibly popular everytime they come out, my sofa lovers even choose the bed sometimes, and I've had it on recommendation that they are chosen over the beautifully made ivy and Duke expensivr beds everytime by the dogs.
And not an expensive experiment

biscuitsandbooks · 05/02/2025 08:08

I've never bought a dog bed and ours will be seven next week!

He just sleeps on the sofa or on our bed.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 05/02/2025 11:16

When she was a puppy she has those doughnut beds scattered around the house (also acted as a wonderful chew toy quite often…) but now she’s 4 She has a teepee tent bed thingy which she loves and will often go in first thing in the morning (because once someone has left the bed she’s been sleeping on then you can’t possibly expect her to stay on it!) or last thing at night (because she’s fed up of everyone’s shit and wants to go to bed…but not alone obvs)…or when there’s guests and she’s over stimulated (I feel her)

During the day its

  • one of three sofas (Only if its on a pile of cushions she can precariously balance on)
  • the fluffy rug (not the non fluffy rug…that’s where she eats her daily carrot and you can’t sleep where you eat!)
  • A blanket basket (Literally a wicker basket filled with blankets that she hops in)
  • a cane armchair….only 1 of 2…other one has never even been glanced at)
  • The armchair in front of the tv generally after she’s had a yell at dog on the screen
  • if it’s REALLY cold…the bathroom floor on the underfloor heating

Can you say Princess?

LandSharksAnonymous · 05/02/2025 11:34

Mine have the those special relaxation doughnut beds - but they only use them during the day and they all pile into one, even though they have one each.

At night, it’s a shared bed for us all even if I drag their doughnut beds upstairs. Most nights I end up clinging to the edge trying not to fall off. But there are worst things than sharing a bed with four goldies, even if some days I wake up choking on dog fur.

pigsDOfly · 05/02/2025 14:33

My dog has a dog bed in the living room and another in my bedroom. She also has a 'vet bed' type thing in the spare room upstairs.

She used to use them from time to time and every so often will get into the one in the living room, dig around on the blanket for a bit and then jump out again.

But I leave them there just in case she should suddenly decide she wants to sleep in one of them.

Mainly she sleeps on the sofa, on the rug in the living room or on my bed.

I think most of us buy them because we feel we are doing the best for our dogs providing them with their own lovely expensive beds, but most dogs are perfectly happy sharing our beds or the sofa.

I actually think my dog thinks the sofa belongs to her. I don't think she likes me using it and will often get off and lie on the rug if I go and sit on it with her.

Fuckingpissedoff1234 · 06/02/2025 23:29

I took my dog to pets at home and we tried several beds in the shop. He chose it (so I bought two). He's not allowed on the sofas or human beds, but will happily sleep in the corner of my room on his chosen dog bed.

However, he does look at me in a disgusted tone if I don't get a blanket out for him at night.

He occasionally takes himself off to the kitchen at night to sleep on one of his other beds (I'm probably snoring and keeping him awake 😂). On these occasions I often worry where he is and if I've locked him outside accidentally overnight.....

hattie43 · 06/02/2025 23:37

Mine won't use a dog bed . They're bulldogs and a bit dim , that combined with they are allowed to sleep where they choose which is invariably the sofa and my bed .

StrikeAlways · 06/02/2025 23:42

My big girl will go in her bed for short periods occasionally. I have finally given-up and given her a chair of her own.
