Dog not eating her food

My rescue Lakeland terrier cross has not eaten any of her food since yesterday morning. She's fed twice a day, Butcher's wet food and usually wolfs it down. BUT, she has happily eaten the odd Twirler treat and other bits and bobs, is drinking water and seems her normal self in all other respects. She has pooed normally this morning too. Should I be concerned? I thought I'd get some fresh chicken to try her with later.

I would not be concerned.

Pet dogs are well fed and can miss a meal or 2 without issues.
Just make sure you take the untouched food away after a few minutes to avoid any cluster feeding or encouraging resource guarding.

On another note, how old is she? Is she spayed? Sometimes girls close to a season can lose appetite.

Otherwise keep an eye on her, wet shiny nose, bright eyes, abdomen not bloated or tender....

Personally, I wouldn't go down the road of offering her fresh chicken - dogs aren't daft, if they learn that not eating their food means they get chicken, they'll just carry on refusing their food Wink

As she's acting perfectly normally, I would just keep offering her food at mealtimes, and take it away after 20 minutes if she doesn't want it. Don't give her treats in between either. It sounds harsh but she won't starve herself.

Thank you. She's definitely not due in season. I may have read your advice a bit late about the chicken!

When ours was young he went through a phase of not eating his dinner - I naturally panicked and gave him anything he would eat. All he learnt was to keep refusing his dinner as he would get nice human food instead 😂

Just keep offering her meals - she won't starve herself. No chicken or treats or anything else - just her food. She'll eat eventually!

Our schnauzer will often not eat for 24 hours, does her no harm at all.

Oh God of I ever offered ours fresh chicken to tempt her to eat she would literally hold out at every meal until it appeared. Good luck OP Grin
