Please be kind as I’m dealing with the loss of my dad as well
I’m faced with having to have my dads beloved dog pts because we’ve exhausted every avenue to find her a home and I’m distraught
Dad died a few months ago , he was terminally ill and had a very large Newfoundland/lab cross .
We can’t have her as I am also seriously ill .
I’ve called every rescue and shelter I can think of ..
no one can take her , and many said they don’t take such big dogs . I even called the Newfoundland rescue but they don’t take cross breeds .
Shes currently being looked after by my dads friend who is elderly and has said he can’t cope anymore , she’s a young, lively and very big dog ..
Ive realised my only choice now is to have her pts and I’ve cried all day and made myself ill .. I’m out of options though .. I don’t know what else to do 😩

Have you tried Lab Rescue South East and Central?

www.loveyourlabrador.co.uk/

They have a lab cross for rehoming on their website so presumably aren't strict about just taking pure labs.

Oh @Sadanddesperate22 that's heartbreaking.

Please please speak to your vet. DH and I have multiple pets, many of them have come to us via our vet when they were going to be PTS. Hopefully there'll be someone like us in your area too.

Edited

The vets is actually part of the animal shelter so they’ve been unable to help 😣

You're not going to have her PTS - your dad would be devastated. It's good you're seeking help here. I will help you find a rescue centre to take her to be rehomed. Can you list all the centres you've already tried who have refused?

This is unhelpful guilt tripping and you need to stop it.

Have you tried these, @Sadanddesperate22 https://www.thenewfoundlandclub.co.uk/welfare.html

A sister club https://northernnewfoundlandclub.org.uk/welfare-rescue-and-rehoming/

I'm so sorry 😞

I really wish we could take her (we've had a St Bernard before so used to big beasties!) but sadly I'm not very well myself at the moment, so we've just had to make the decision not to take on any more.

Bless you, what a sad situation 🌺

Where abouts are you?

Have you tried black retriever x rescue? Can be found on Facebook. They rehome nationally.

Also came to say Black Retriever X Rescue.
They have a huge network of fosterers and are very well known. They are very often able to help when there is a risk of imminent pts.

Thank you I will give them a call tomorrow
@QuestionableMouse they can’t help unless you are a member and only help with purebred newfies

Have you contacted Many Tears rescue?

They’re based all over the UK and may be able to help.

spikeandbuffy · 27/06/2024 00:35

If you've got FB I would do a FB post
Obviously being careful but people might suggest a rescue or foster home or even a friend of a friend that's looking for a dog

I dog walk for a rescue sometimes and by posting the dogs I'm walking on my FB(with rescue permission) I've rehomed 3 with friends!

For the love of god, do not advertise the dog via Facebook. Idiotic advice.

spikeandbuffy · 27/06/2024 00:42

I'm not saying advertise the dog free to any home on a public post and giving it to the first person that replies

But a post asking for advice may throw up a foster home or smaller rescues. I didn't even know a friend was looking for a dog until I posted about one via the rescue (and yes they were all home checked)

I had a friend looking for a cat, another one had posted about a family cat she couldn't keep. I put them in touch and cat was happily rehomed

Well - I have some amazing news ! My uncle on my mums side , who I’d originally asked but who said no as he didn’t want to take on another dog and was quite adamant that he wouldn’t have another dog - has said he will take her and I’m overjoyed because he lives rurally , is retired and walks miles every day , she’ll not only be spoiled rotten and have the life she deserves but it means she won’t leave the family . I’m ecstatic!

What a fantastic update OP!

Sadanddesperate22 · 27/06/2024 07:55

Apparently my mum called him last night and pleaded my case , she knew that he’d be perfect to have her but he’d been fearful of getting attached to another dog . When she told him the situation had reached crisis point he said yes straight away .. I wish he’d said yes weeks ago though because I could have saved a lot of anguish !

I would leave it tied up outside a dog’s home with a donation.

Dear God alive.
