Accident cost and insurance

My dog was hit by a car this morning and she's at the vet hospital now. The vet said the costs could be upward of £2k. We have insurance but I'm not sure how it works. Do we pay upfront and claim it back or is it covered directly? I would pay anything to get her better but I need to be practical and move some money around / check credit card balance if I need to pay upfront.

My vet it's different for different polices.
Some are you pay and claim others they deal directly with the vet for payment, from memory that is petplan.

@Justwingingit2005 thank you - I'm with Tesco pet insurance. When the vets call I'll ask them. I'm in a bit of a mess but realise the practicalities need to be dealt with too

Best wishes for her treatment and recovery. It will depend on whether your vet is willing to accept a direct claim, and if they do whether they accept direct claims from the company you are with (some will exclude slow payers or historically difficult companies to deal with).

It’s very likely you will need to pay your fixed excess and any percentage/co-payment excess up front, and a direct claim processing fee if they charge one. You will need to provide a claim form or open a claim on your insurer’s online portal, as applicable.

If they don’t accept direct claims then you will need to pay at the time of treatment and submit a claim to be reimbursed yourself.

@currahee thank you - just heard from the vet and she's going to be ok. A lot of internal bruising but no damage thank god. A stay overnight for IV pain relief I think.
