How to get rid of fox poo smell!

PointerParty · 22/03/2024 14:46

One of my dogs has taken to rolling in fox poo at every given opportunity. Standard dog shampoo obviously does nothing, I bought special fox poo shampoo and it’s not much better.

Ketchup makes me gag so that’s out. I tried vinegar and I don’t think it worked, she smelled like fox poo and vinegar! Any other suggestions please?

We use the Animology Fox Poo shampoo, which works really well for ours. Is that the one you tried? There might still be a faint aroma, but that usually goes after a few hours or the next day.

PointerParty · 22/03/2024 14:52

@hedgehoglurker yes that’s the one I have. Maybe I’m not using enough of it

I also find fox poo shampoo works. Otherwise you could maybe try normal human shower gel. It’s a bloody nightmare, my lab is awful for it. It smells so so badly. I find fairy liquid works on her lead if she gets it on that but I wouldn’t like to use it on her

lotsofdogshere · 22/03/2024 15:01

Fox poo shampoo is the best thing I’ve found

catin8oots · 22/03/2024 15:06

Cheapo tea tree shampoo from Aldi/Lidl

TossieFleacake · 22/03/2024 15:10

I think it's the vinegar in the ketchup that makes it work so well so if you can't handle pure ketchup, perhaps straight vinegar may work?
I always cover the dog in ketchup before I've even wet him, don my rubber gloves and rub it vigorously into the fox poo area and then rinse him off and wash as normal.

PointerParty · 22/03/2024 15:22

Ah thanks tea tree is worth a try! I’ll be more liberal with the fox poo shampoo too. If all
else fails I might have to get over my issues with ketchup.

It’s almost every day at the moment, she’s so quick as well. One minute she’s standing the next she’s on the ground!

Normal shower gel always worked for my Jack Russell!Definitely an advantage having a short haired coat!

Floralnomad · 22/03/2024 15:28

We have the bugalugs tea tree and oatmeal shampoo . Tea tree is the only thing that ever got rid of the smell when my dog used to do this - he doesn’t do it anymore

DollyDoofer · 22/03/2024 15:29

Ahhh… there’s nothing quite like the smell of fox poo 😫 When you find out the answer let me know please. I’ve tried everything, over the years. Ketchup works best but yes I agree ketchup makes me quesy 🤢 Possibly not as much as the fox poo 😫

Just why do dogs find something so vile smelling irresistible? Especially when they know they’ll be going straight in the bath after rolling in it 🤨

PointerParty · 22/03/2024 15:30

Ooh thanks, just adding tea tree shampoo to my shopping basket!

The other issue is having to put her in the car coated in it. I drive home with all the windows down but I think she smell is lurking in the boot too

Cheapo tea tree shampoo from Aldi/Lidl

Came here to say similar.
I prefer the Alberto Balsam one as it's stronger and the thick conditioner works well and keeps them smelling great for days.
Also repels fleas etc.

Papyrophile · 22/03/2024 15:44

You've reminded me that I need more fox poo shampoo, or maybe tea tree. Thanks!

ThePlumsOfWilfred · 22/03/2024 15:45

I've honestly found almost any half decent dog shampoo does the trick but it's entirely possible that is because I end up using half a bottle of the stuff each time Grin

ilovesushi · 22/03/2024 22:10

We have the same fox poo shampoo and it works really well and she smells lovely afterwards.

abracadabra1980 · 22/03/2024 22:20

What does fox poo smell like? Probably hard to describe? My boy has, 3 or 4 times, eaten what I thought was human poo. It smelled like a babies nappy and made me gag. Always located in a bush, too. No rolling. Drives me insane.

PointerParty · 23/03/2024 09:37

It's really hard to describe, it's nothing like human or dog poo. It's got a stagnant water/drains quality to it.

My other dog found a human poo in a park once and did the same thing, she then got some of it on my hand. I could have cried!!

Vosene does the job without needing to use an excessive amount

indianrunnerduck · 24/03/2024 15:38

Along with everyone else, I find that the animology odour & fox poo remover works a treat. It also removes the stench of rotten fish & dead sea birds, when my dog rolls in those on the beach 😩

muddyford · 24/03/2024 17:12

Tomato purée rubbed in well then shampooed out, or the Animology fox poo shampoo.

CherryogDog · 26/03/2024 08:37

The only thing that works with my double coated Terrier is Fairy liquid, rinsed thoroughly and followed up with a bit of human conditioner.
The thin coated lurcher is easier (thank goodness as I wouldn't be able to lift her in the bath), a wipe with water based wipes to get the solid bits off, then basically a strip wash with a soapy cloth and rinsed the same way.
They make my car smell horrific 🤑

PointerParty · 26/03/2024 09:49

Thanks everyone! Miraculously she's had a few days break from fox poo rolling, now that I've stocked up on various shampoos. I'll be well prepared for next time
