Good morning, I need a second opinion (well many to be fair)! We sadly said goodbye to our beloved family dog back in September, we've been lost ever since. I've stumbled across a local pup 8 months old needing to be re-homed. He's a working cocker which is the same breed we had so not completely out of our depth. He's with a young family, 3 kids under 5, 2 dogs, 2 cats, many rabbits.. we met him last night and he was completely over the threshold at first greeting. He did eventually calm down but it was obvious he'd need some sort of training in this area. We then went for a walk on the green, bizarrely outside on and off the lead he's amazing. Whistle trained and amazing recall. There reason for rehoming him are valid. They've bitten off more than they'd bargained for, 3 kids and 2 dogs is not working by well. We could be the perfect fit, my boys are teens, I work from home and my time is flexible. We also have two homes (one rural / farm based, one town house 10 minutes from where he currently resides). I've been awake for hours.. am I doing the right thing 😩

Rehoming can be very risky and end in heartbreak or worse but you sound like you know what you are doing OP and you have considered all factors.
Of course the current owners could be a bunch of lying bastards and the dog could be Cujo in disguise but it sounds like you are going into it with your eyes open and you are probably a good fit.
Given all that I vote you go for it

Well, we decided to go for it..! Two other families also meeting this dog over the next couple of days and then they will make their decision. I thought that was sensible and shows they really are trying to do the best for this dog. If we are chosen it's meant to be, if not so be it. 🐾

aww I hope it goes well.

I used to be a Rehoming Officer for a large UK charity. There's nothing you have said that rings any alarm bells. Sounds a very genuine rehome given what you've said. I like that you've mentioned 'threshold' which shows you understand that hyper energy! Go for it and good luck 😁

That's fantastic news 😁 We need an update - and of course a pic! So happy for you-and him. You sound like the perfect family for him. Good luck!

rockingbird · 18/03/2024 05:40

He was quite cautious getting in the car and arriving home but soon came out of his shell. A very bouncy pup 😆 he's woken me up early with lots of kisses so totally forgiven. I'll give him a couple of days to settle and decompress, test out his recall with me in the garden and then see how we go.

Oh he’s gorgeous!! I’m so glad he’s with you, he’s going to thrive in the coming weeks.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2024 10:06

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 18/03/2024 10:10

Awwh he is beautiful! So happy for you all!

ElizabethanAgain · 18/03/2024 10:58

So happy for you. Lucky dog. Lucky family.

Icequeen01 · 18/03/2024 20:45

I can't believe how relaxed he is already. I hope you've had a great first day with him.

rockingbird · 19/03/2024 16:25

Well.. day two and he's doing great. 😊 Full of life but a little timid of people. Don't think he's had much in the way of socialisation as noises and the general hustle and bustle seem to spook him. Perfectly fine with other dogs, he's just keen to play and so eager to please.

Wonderful, well done you. Many many happy years ahead <3

Mrsjayy · 21/03/2024 17:11

That sounds promising. I read something that it can take rescues 3 months to settle in properly hopefully he will settle in. Maybe the children he lived with were flighty and frightened him that's why he's spooked easily.

abracadabra1980 · 22/03/2024 22:53

Yes three months is a ball park 'settling time' for rescues. He's certainly landed on his paws! Wishing you all a wonderful life together. He's beautiful.

rockingbird · 23/03/2024 09:18

He's doing OK. Left for a hour yesterday alone as I had my nails done.. seemed OK! Absolutely ball mad.. brings it straight back and will literally run and run (true spaniel style). Definitely some nervousness around people/noise which we will gently introduce him to over time. I suspect he's had very little experience outside the house in day light as he can get spooked easily by general noise. He also very thin, 3 small meals a day lots of toilet breaks and exercise in the garden (fortunately a very big garden) All work in progress..

Icequeen01 · 23/03/2024 15:07

He looks like he is positively smiling in that photo! What a lucky dog he is. Is that your garden @rockingbird? I thought it was the park!

cooldarkroom · 23/03/2024 15:50
