Training a dog not to sit on one chair.

Our dog has the run of the downstairs and sits on all the chairs - he doesn’t shed much but we have a new armchair and whatever material is on it catches all the hairs. I’d love to train him not to go on that chair? Is that possible? Any ideas?

Take shifts with other people in the house to stand close and a sharp down every sign of getting on.. Only 2 of my 4 are allowed on the sofa..

My dogs know what they can and can’t go on. Keep an eye on them when you first get it and give a sharp ‘no’ (or in my case ‘Ah’) if they look like they’re about to jump on it

Your dog haging the run of downstairs is your problem
He thinks he is in charge and you have allowed this

Why would having the run of downstairs make OP's dog think he's in charge?

And what exactly is he supposed to think he's in charge of?

The dog hasn't bitten anyone because he's been told not to sit on the chair. OP just needs to train him to know that that particular chair is out of bounds to him.

Prevention always. Block it off when you're not there and distract when he tries to get up the rest of the time.

Dogs don't think they're in charge and even if they did their owners control every resource - when they go out, when they eat, what they eat, where they can go. They know where they are in the fantasy pecking order. Except there isn't a pecking order because it's a dog.

Much easier to teach him which chairs he can go on rather than try to prevent (unless you make it inaccessible to him)

Train your dog to sit on a specific mat - easy to do with treats on the mat.
Put the mat on the chair he can sit on.

It's much easier to teach a dog what you do want it to do than to teach it not to do something you don't want it to do.

My dog is allowed on the sofa but not the recliner. I once came downstairs to find her on the recliner. I didn't acknowledge her at all but slowly lifted the chair from the back so she couldn't stay on it. I walked out of the room and then came back in and sat on the sofa which has her blankets on and cuddled her. Happened twice and she never goes on the recliner now.
