I've just had an argument with my son who says I've not trained my dog.
My dog has been with us 3 years since a puppy.
I have taught him Stay, Sit, Toilet, Off, Lie down.
He knows he's not allowed on the furniture, when I take him out and say 'toilet' he does it straight away.
There was an issue where he barked when people come to the house and runs over and he
had been nipping at their heels . So I tell him
him 'N0'. when the doorbell goes and I say 'bed' and he stays in his bed while I answer the door.
The other issue he has is chasing cars so I have to make sure he is on a lead.
We live on a single track miles from anywhere but one or two cars a day pass. If he is off lead he will chase them.
Our yard is well fenced 80 x60 ft and he can't get on the road from it.
So because of the car issue would you say he's not trained? I don't know how to get through to him not to do it. I try not to give him the chance by keeping him on a lead when out on walks.
If he is offlead,he just won't listen and will chase them

But that is because they aren't trained sufficiently. No working border collie chases, because the breed would be useless as herders if they did. My border collies don't chase, because they are trained not to (unless that is the purpose of the activity).

This is not true. The border collie next door to us was a car chaser whenever he got the chance. He was also a working sheep dog on the farm.

Then not a very good one. Herding dogs need to be obedient to instructions and absolutely not "chasers" - chasing causes the flock to scatter. to rush headlong without thought as to danger around them, or, if you have a strong leader in the flock there can literally be a confrontation. Brought up on a sheep and cattle farm. A chaser would have been "gone" - farmers don't do niceties. One word or sign from the handler should cease any chasing behaviour, whatever it is directed at.

It sounds to me like you’ve trained your dog as best you can within the confines of a normal busy life where you have loads of other stuff to be getting on with as well as being a good dog owner. All dogs have their moments. Most people barely train their dogs at all so you’ve done way more than average IMO. We’d all love to have amazingly trained dogs, but life just isn’t like that for most of us. The way the dog trainer carried on at our puppy training classes, we all felt like terrible dog owners because we couldn’t spend 24/7 training our dogs like she implied we should be doing.
Be kind to yourself, and if your son thinks he can do better, suggest he gets his own dog and trains it himself. So easy to judge, not so easy to actually do it.

OP I would say that your dog has not been shown how to behaviour in the situation of cars. It is is a border collie it is very very very easy to sort out though

This 👆

Also, training is a life long thing, not a fixed term thing.

Thanks all, he is a collie crossed with pug. !!
An unusual combination but yes he nips at visitors '. heels, chases cyclists and cars ,

It is definitely a work in progress. At the moment I am working on greeting visitors in a calmer manner, preferably by staying in his bed .
When out walking on lead when a car comes and I feel him pull on the lead I say No and he stops pulling so I'm hoping the message is getting through. But I can't let him walk lead free.
