Does anyone else have a mongrel?

Just sharing the joy really. She was about 6-7 months old when I got her from a rescue charity 6 weeks ago, and she’s an absolute delight. Very loving, very respectful around my elderly whippet, very easy and intuitive to train (simple commands so far) and generally happy/problem-free, despite a less than stellar back story (animal hoarding). I’d agonised over breeds before I saw her picture on my local rescue association FB page. SO glad I got her. Happy to pay the puppy tax 😊

Oh these dogs ❤️

I love mongrels and would never seek out a specific breed or a pedigree dog.

This is our 8 year-old rescue mongrel who we got at 4 months. He had come over from Ireland (puppy farm, possibly). We are fairly certain he has some border collie, corgi and Jack Russell but probably lots of others besides (even though people often ask if he’s a podenco or an Australian sheep dog). He is great company, so affectionate and really healthy.

Unluckycat1your ddog has a lot of Saluki in!

HardcoreLadyType · 17/11/2023 13:29

Lots of people have mongrels, but they call them things like “cavapoo” and pay a fortune for them.

We always had mongrels when I was a child, although we have a pedigree dog at the moment. They are great.

I like the term “butchers dog”, personally!

Aww she's beautiful! Such soulful eyes. Congratulations on your lovely girl, she sounds a real joy.

I have an 11 month old mongrel. The rescue mentioned four possible breeds that might be in the mix. She's just forgotten all recall so isn't the easiest atm, but I wouldn't change her and feel lucky to have her 💛

Absolutely beautiful, got to be a bit of Saluki?

OldTinHat · 17/11/2023 13:35

Oh! The face!!

And this is why I absolutely must get another rescue dog.

UmaniCaroline · 17/11/2023 13:41

@Laguiri she's a beauty!

Waitingfordoggo · 17/11/2023 13:41

True @HardcoreLadyType, though cavapoos, labradoodles etc are a mix of two breeds and I usually think of mongrels as being more mixed than two breeds. (Our mutt’s DNA suggested one of his parents was a border collie cross, while the other parent was a mix of multiple breeds).

We have a rescue cockapoo who , although classed as a designer dog, really is just a mongrel.
She's the best, we love her personality and how she's the perfect mix of cocker and poodle, she has a wee poodle nose and cocker ears, and is absolutely bonkers in every way!!

Reallynotoverreacting · 17/11/2023 13:56

Also, we think there may be springer in her too so she's definitely a mongrel

SirChenjins · 17/11/2023 13:57

I have a cockapoo - no problem saying he’s a mongrel, because that’s what he is!

Redhairblackheart · 17/11/2023 14:01

Fate interjected twice to make sure this little lady found her way to us 2 weeks ago.

6months old, we think JR x Corgi (im itching to DNA test her!) We were her 3rd home in 2 weeks and i cant think why, shes good as gold (aside from knicking stuff and destroying it!). She was at risk of being passed around before my sister scooped her up and called me.

Shes settled in perfectly and its like she was always here. Our miniature Dachshund loves finally having some company, cats not so much.

Billed by the rescue as 'large mixed breed'

Here’s my mutt!

He came from Romania, we had him DNA tested out of pure curiosity as we never knew quite what to say when we were asked what he was. His result came back as Eastern European village dog, so we researched it and they are essentially dogs that have been breeding amongst themselves in their own little dog communities for centuries, so before humans started selectively breeding dogs. Pretty cool Smile and he is just gorgeous.

Looks like a Saluki Lurcher ~ very pretty

somethingisnotquiteright · 17/11/2023 14:58

We have a mongrel..we thinks he's collie/retrivever.

Aren't cockerpoos/labradoodles and the like mongrels too, seeing as they are all mixed breeds?

Any dog that comes from 2 or more different breeds is a mongrel. A controversial opinion but some people are just daft enough to pay £££'s for them, therefore encouraging backyard breeding.

I'd much rather have a mongrel than a pure bred as in my experience, they tend to be healthier and live longer as any breed specific health issues are less prevalent.

Iheartmysmart · 17/11/2023 15:06

Lovely dogs ❤️ I lost my cocker spaniel a few weeks ago and am still a bit broken from that but when I’m ready I want a scruffy little mongrel from a rescue centre.

disappearingfish · 17/11/2023 15:08

Best thread ever. Thanks OP.

Lottaflowers · 17/11/2023 16:31

My Mum has one and she is absolutely adorable! From day 1 after they rescued her it was like she just knew we were her family and she loved us all straight away. She's getting on a bit now but still bounds around like a puppy 😍

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 17/11/2023 16:38

@Tdp123 and @hereismydog here’s my Romanian wotsit. She’s an absolute softy and I love her!
We’ve never had a pedigree in 47 years of having dogs. All rescues, all very healthy and long lived.
Upside down on the sofa is her preferred pose!

TallulahBetty · 17/11/2023 16:41

We used to. They are usually a delight, with very few genetic problems and can live to an old age. Plus they're unique!

I always thought 2 crossed pedigrees are a cross-breed, and more than 2 breeds involved makes it a mongrel? Ours had at least 4/5 breeds mashed in so I'm probably not the expert.

Laguiri · 17/11/2023 18:20

I’m loving seeing all your dogs and hearing their different stories; mongrels are a whole different world from narrowing down the traits you want and looking for a reliable breeder (which is what I did when I bought my beloved whippet). Being open to surprises is great!
