Has anyone used valerian with your dogs?

And if so what dosage did you use?
I did my monthly visit to my local health food shop to stock up on my vitamins and supplements today and got talking to the practitioner/owner.
I mentioned we have a nine month old puppy (a larger breed) and was a bit apprehensive about his first guy Fawkes night.
He suggested I gave him one of my valerian tablets. He'd checked his data base to check that the one I usually buy is safe for dogs.
We've given him a capsule this evening at about eight o clock and we've had none of the usual barking and he's gone to bed really quite quietly.
I'm wondering if the dose was too high.
He's incredibly calm considering he's usually a squirmy worm in bed.
Thinking maybe if we use it again should give him half a capsule?
Cos as nice as it is to have a calm dog, it's a world away from his usual high energy antics.

Have a look at holly barkers sport dog nutrition page on Facebook - canine nutritionist. She has some amazing advice about nutrition and supplements and I know references valerian on there. She has recipes for bedtime biscuits as well and other calming stuff - pukka nighttime tea, camomile etc.

I buy these. They are fantastic at calming dogs. They don't knock the dog out, just make them chilled.

We use the NutriPaw calming supplements for our beagle - he normally gets two a day but around Fireworks night/New Year we double the dose (it's safe to do this) so he gets four.

It really helps as he just seems to chill out and sleep whereas otherwise he's quite on edge and alert.

I use dorwest skullcap and valerian tablets for mine.
I took some myself before I went to the dentist yesterday and never felt so chilled!

I was going to buy some dog calming tablets for fireworks but realised they contain valerian so I gave our boy a nytol tablet and he was fine. Gave him 2 the next night and he was even better, although he's an 18mo ESS so it only calmed him down a little bit. No ill effects at all, and he has a sensitive tummy and doesn't tolerate many herbal remedies (like Billy no mates). Nytol contains valerian only.

Pooch & mutt do some calming treats that have valerian and hemp in, they helped my dog a little bit last weekend ( she really hates fireworks) but they definitely help her have a fully settled night.
