Old dog pooing in house

Having a nightmare with our old spaniel. He's just started pooing in the house. He went out 3 times yesterday, we went out for the evening and came back to poo. Any advice?

Make a vet appointment - anything new like that, you want a check up done.

He's maybe not able to hold as long with age? Agree about seeing the vet - check your insurance as they might do video consultations as part of your cover for no extra cost.

He needs to see a vet. It could just be old age but there are medical issues that need ruling out first.

My old dog did this for the last few years. Otherwise he enjoyed his life and I would not have put him to sleep just for my convenience. In the end it was another issue that caused the final vet visit - only a few weeks after having a check up which said his quality of life was very good. But it's very hard to deal with and we all have different things we can tolerate.

Have there been any changes in his routine or life generally?

I ask because my elder lab did this when we demolished the kennel and run to clear space for the new one and the dogs spent the day in the house for a while. There were a few instances of poo in the house, even after going out.

Fingers crossed, we seem to be back to normal, although it is noticeable that she is less good at holding things in. When she needs to go, she needs to go.
