What to get new puppy owner

Relative is getting a puppy soon - first time with a puppy. They've had a retired greyhound before, but this will be a border terrier cross poodle, so light years of difference in terms of age, temperament, energy levels.

What could I get them as a welcome present? They'll cover all the basics of bed/crate/bowls/lead/toys. But is there anything experienced puppy owners would recommend that made life easier, or were particularly useful?

I would lean towards a nice personalised thing, but they're currently planning to wait till they get to know the puppy better to pick a name.

A bottle of wine for them!

TheDogsMother · 04/10/2023 15:18

I bought friends with a new puppy and plush toy for the pup and a book called Easy Peasy Puppy Sqeezy all about training.

Potentialmadcatlady · 04/10/2023 15:20

Diazepam for them 😁

Dizzydeers · 04/10/2023 15:22

Berroca or red bull to keep up with the high energy pup!

JamieJ93 · 04/10/2023 15:23

The biggest pack of puppy pads you can source 😂

They have a 3yo so tbh I think they're a bit mad signing up for essentially another toddler, with razor sharp needle puppy teeth! But I do accept it's difficult if not impossible to find an adult rescue dog when you have a pre-school age child.

I have considered getting them a puppy book but there is quite a range and not sure I want to dive into "here have a book advocating XYZ approach" when I haven't read it myself, or had a puppy myself! If it's anything like baby books it's a very personal decision what you vibe with...

You could get them a breed specific book?

PenhillDarkMonarch · 04/10/2023 15:41

A photo frame for a nice puppy picture to go in?

Crocs to help with those late night dashes into the garden? Or a torch?

A poo bag holder for walks?

A christmas collar? (Salt dog studios do nice ones)

A little home camera for recording him when they start to leave him (they are cheaper than you think!)?

Training treats - eg Pet Munchies do little squares of duck, chicken etc.

A dog advent calendar? Lilys Kitchen do one I think.

givemushypeasachance · 04/10/2023 15:48

Ooh a camera might be an idea @PenhillDarkMonarch - I've got cats and have had cameras for years for when I'm away. They never felt they needed one with their greyhound as he just snored on the sofa until the dog walker popped in to see him on days people were out. But for a puppy I could see even being able to have a camera on them overnight might be useful. I'll check they aren't intending to re-purpose the baby monitor first!

A nice treat pouch with little pockets for poo bags or for sorting treats to allow easy access to high / low value treats on a walk or at training.
