Puppy car travel

We pick up our labrador pup in a couple of weeks and have about an hours drive in the car. What do you use to transport a puppy in the car? We've had adult dogs up to now who have happily gone in the boot. What do you use up until they're big enough for that?

We used a soft folding crate off Amazon. Used that for the pup until it was old enough to travel in the boot space behind a dog guard. One person can sit next to the crate with one hand in to comfort the puppy if required.

Alternatively you can get a little travel harness that clicks into the seatbelt and have the pup on back seat or lap but still secure.

I use a seat belt adapter fastened to the harness.

My pup was 2.5 Kg so I just held her. 3 hours, she slept all the way home.

When we brought our beagle home, he travelled in a harness attached to a seatbelt on the back seat, and I sat next to him - he basically slept in my lap the entire way.

They have to be restrained by law - either on a belt or in a crate/cage etc.

Our golden retriever is 8 months old. When we brought her the hour drive home I just sat in the back with her on my lap, no fuss whatsoever. We bought a small crate for the car and just placed it in the back for the first few months as it took her a while to be happy on her own in the boot

Our dog was always anxious in the car until we got him a soft folding crate which is an absolute game changer. He is so calm and much happier now.

We’ve bought a little soft box thing with a clip in that fixes to the car seat to transport our pup home next week, my adult dd will be in the back with her though.

Thanks for your replies, they're really helpful. We'll go with the strap to secure to a seat belt for now, and see about a folding crate further down the road. Thanks again!

We have the seat belt attachment which attaches to her harness. We have now got an attachment which goes round the headrest then onto harness as she got tied up in the other one a few times. Much better!
