He's by the garden door- two feet in. We've said good night and he's at the door barking. Tried loads of different tricks but he won't come in! Help! Every time we go close he runs back into the garden!

Been two nights now. Since he was sick on Sunday night. But only does this at night. During the day he's in and out no problem.

food
throw bits of biscuit to him until he feels happy enough to come to one’s thrown in the house and send someone round to close the door behind him from outside.
morning if he’s really greedy just a bowl un the kitchen

Bit hard to help with such little information...what is he barking at? What's his recall usually like? Have you tried anything else except walking towards him? If it was my dog and all else failed we can him to do anything with the promise of a snack!

tryingsomethingnew · 12/09/2023 21:40

Tried closing the door behind him whilst hiding.

Have offers treats but he goes near the door, then runs away when we get close. Can't get him in. Never like this before usually follows us upstairs.

Don't know what he's barking at. He's half inside. Like he's calling us. But when we go near he runs back into garden.

If we sit downstairs (like normal) he's still at the garden door not coming in. It's been an hour now

Show him the lead like you’re going for a walk and get him in that way? Always works for mine

SoulCaptain · 12/09/2023 21:43

If my dog does this they are hungry

Nousernamesleftatall · 12/09/2023 21:43

Go out with him and try to see what he is barking at. That’s what he wants you to do.

tryingsomethingnew · 12/09/2023 21:44

Done the lead thing for a walk. He's been on a walk tonight.

He's not barking AT anything outside. It's inside. Like he's spooked to come in.

Is he excited by walks? Could you take the lead in the garden shut the door and encourage him to come to you that way. Put the lead on him and take him indoors.

whatthehelldowecare · 12/09/2023 21:44

Mine did this once and it turns out there was a hedgehog he was desperate to show us 😂

Mine has done this too!

Anothernamechangeee · 12/09/2023 21:49

Or maybe it’s a ghost

tryingsomethingnew · 12/09/2023 21:54

Got him in. Phew!

PP has said about the lead and going for walk but I went to the side gate and opened that and he came close to attach lead. He was sort of scared about jumping into the kitchen but I don't know if it's because it was wet on the floor from the rain but he came in on the lead. Calm now!

Thank you so much for the advice

Is there something in the kitchen he’s scared of a mouse m, new washer? How old is he? As random barking happens with dementia

tryingsomethingnew · 13/09/2023 07:35

He's just over one years old. He did a bit of it this morning but he saw his daddy so came straight in. Let's see tonight! Only happened the last two nights.

Mine won’t come in if the sweeping brush or mop is too close to him incase it attacks him 😂

IngGenius · 13/09/2023 08:30

I would prevent it by going out with him on a lead in the evening.

GH9687 · 13/09/2023 08:33

Try attaching a lead to him when he goes out to the garden in the evening, then you'll be able to gently bring him in with positive reinforcement. Our dog also loves the garden at bedtime!

muddyford · 13/09/2023 17:40

My spaniel started the refusal to come in at night so I must popped him on his lead for the last trip in the garden . Now he doesn't do it.

BeansOnToast32 · 13/09/2023 18:22

My last dog did this with a hedgehog 😂 one time it was sitting below the doorstep where I couldn't see it and she wouldn't jump over it, she just stood barking at me. Another time there was one in the middle of the garden and she kept running in and out of the house barking like she'd lost her mind.

TallulahG · 22/09/2023 18:49

My stupid dogs used to do this.. at a frog, a leaf... anything. So now they only go out on long lines, we just leave them by the back door, so I can grab them and bring them back in if they start woofing. Get a bright coloured one (red for us) so it's easy to see in the dark.
