Interestingly, l had a letter from our vets last week to say that the RCVA has advised that a consultation (£80.00 at mine) should be in place before prescribing ANY flea treatment or wormers. That is going to cost me 120.00 every 6 months for flea treatment from now on. Not happy.

Are you sure? Our animals have always had annual vaccinations and/or checks and that’s when they sign off any prescriptions. Ours also does free prescription checks as long as you buy your drugs from them. That is not changing according to a press release they put out this week. They are independent and very well run vets. I can imagine some of the chains using it as an excuse to charge more.

My DD’s a vet. RCVS have now backtracked on that plan apparently.

VioletladyGrantham · 09/09/2023 16:42

Really? That is reassuring. Anything l can quote when l write back to them?
Mine is independent as well.

WhyHasAllTheRumGone · 09/09/2023 16:55

That's robbery! My vets said that you'd only need an annual check up for them to sign off on 12 months of of flea/wormers, this would just happen when they get their annual boosters so you wouldn't need to pay a consultation fee.

VioletladyGrantham · 09/09/2023 18:39

Many thanks for the info' Ingenius. I do hope my practice backtracks as well.

MyShrivelledGnarlyFinger · 09/09/2023 19:00

Thank you for this I have just let rip!

Orarewedancer · 09/09/2023 19:55

It's not back tracking, it's just delaying when it begins to give vets time to actually prepare for the changes. Come January it will be enforced. This decision isn't at practice level, it's part of new rules the RCVS who regulate vets have implemented. However they done so without any clear pre-instructions which ended up in a lot of confusion, public harassment and headache for on the ground staff. As always.
