Keeping legs dry on wet walks (ours, not DDogs!!)?

SweetPotatoAndPeanutStew · 10/08/2023 11:15

Hi, any suggestions re the above? Question prompted by wet field walk yesterday which included a narrow path through a field of high crops...got back and my legs were sodden. My coat goes to just past bum and not looking to change that as I'm happy with it.

Any recommendations for waterproof trousers? Leggings? Other?

I find waterproof trousers too warm, even in the winter.
I think I would just wear gym leggings with wellies and accept getting wet!

Clymene · 10/08/2023 11:18

I have waterproof over trousers. I think I got them from mountain warehouse. They've got poppers down the side and they live in the boot.

Otherwise knee high wellies are good!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 10/08/2023 11:20

My waterproof trousers are actually golf ones and I find them a much better fit than regular ones. Like the PP I find them too hot other than depths of winter tho. I'd go gym leggings that at least dry quickly or shorts if it's wet but warm.

WiggelyWooWorm · 10/08/2023 11:22

Honestly, I think the only way is to have some lightweight leggings and some thin trainers and just accept they are going to get soaked - but you come back, change into dry and they (hopefully) dry quickly enough for the next walk.

I have not yet met the walking boot that can withstand constant wet long grass - regardless of their waterproof claims. In fact, the more waterproof they claim to be, the harder the buggers are to dry again.

Instead I have some slip on trainers from clarks that are very thin material and usually dry off within a few hours.

I wear what I call my "dog leggings" - just accept if I'm not wearing my longer length coat I'm going to get wet and/or muddy. I bought a few pairs of M&S Good Move ones on eBay (new but much cheaper) and rotate them through a quick wash/dry routine.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 10/08/2023 14:05

At this time of year I just wear shorts/old leggings and accept I'm going to get wet and mucky. It's way too hot for a coat and waterproof trousers.

Waterproof trousers in winter but in summer just quick drying hiking trousers or running tights

BunnyBetChetwynnd · 10/08/2023 14:12

I wear shorts and just dry my legs.

SweetPotatoAndPeanutStew · 10/08/2023 16:29

Thanks all! I'm thinking I need to stock up on some extra pairs of gym leggings!

I wear walking trousers and just let them dry afterwards.

rbe78 · 10/08/2023 16:50

I wear shorts - legs dry quicker than fabric.

Yerroblemom1923 · 10/08/2023 16:51

Wellies and shorts this time of year. Jump in shower once back home.

IngGenius · 10/08/2023 19:21

I don't wear shorts as too many ticks and adders around in our area. I wear Acai leggings that dry really quickly if they do get wet

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 11/08/2023 12:43

Gaiters!! I have been using them for about 3 years and they are brilliant. I got mine from Amazon. They keep my legs (below knee) and feet very dry and also protect from thorns and nettles. Cosy on cold days too.

Adarajames · 12/08/2023 11:44

Yup another fan of gaiters here too. Also provide extra protection from ticks and other bitey stinging creatures / plants. I wear Lowa military style hiking boots mostly, and they are actually waterproof as claimed, as long as you clean and re proof regularly.

Newfluff · 12/08/2023 11:46

Another that just wears leggings (and only for dog walking)

Ticks in long grass are too prevalent here to wear shorts, I also tuck the leggings into the socks.

countrygirl99 · 12/08/2023 11:49

Yep gaiters. Will never win the fashion stakes but effective and much better than waterproof trousers if it's not cold

Yes, this was the ladies' summer uniform when I lived in the country. Attractive 😂
