VERY scared dog

My neighbour has a rescue dog, 2 years old, with a bad history of abuse. She's had him for 6 months and he is still scared of everything.

She had to go into hospital today, she has no friends or family so of course I agreed to take the dog for her.

The poor thing is shaking in his crate. He's been in there for 5 hours now (the door is open), do I 'force' him out for a mooch around the garden for a wee?? I've tried gently coaxing him out with chicken and sausages. No luck.

Looks like my poor neighbour will be in hospital at least a week.

Any advice gratefully received. If it's better to leave him in there and just clean up the wee/poo then that's fine. Just want him to be OK.

I hope she realises how lucky she is you took him - so many people wouldn’t have.

I can’t even get professionals to take mine on as a client 🤣

But no photo! 😭
Maybe if neighbour permits?
Your neighbour is so lucky to have you. Amazing, job. So many people would not have had the patience for that. Gold star.
Will you show her this thread or best she just knows the highlights? ☺️

This is the best thread I've ever read on here. You did amazingly, have to admit I have a few tears in my eyes

I nominated this for classics as its a true faith in humanity especially for the dog.

@PimpMyFridge

Genuinely btw, I was recommended a home boarder who is also a trainer so used to tricky dogs, I contacted her saying he takes a very long time to get used to new people (I did put more details) and what I was wanting to do was just book her regularly to get to know him with no fixed dates I currently was looking for, just working round her schedule so he had someone he could go to that he knew if ever needed.

She answered saying she had no availability 😐🤣🤣🤣🤣

Well done! Neighbour home and reunion = a lovely end. Except maybe it' s not the end! - for you, the dog, you and the dog, you and your future fostering/home boarding for above PPs.... :-)

Oh my, you were prepared to hire her regularly just so he had a familiar face for when the time came and she still said no!
Wouldn't it be funny if op was nearby and went into business as @Datafan55 said. 😁 She's the dog whisperer and if she can do this neighbour's dog, can do any I reckon! That was a pretty extreme example of a frightened dog. Poor thing, he really got lucky with op though.

Plus you can quote this thread as your job experience, @EmmrT :-) Wonder if that would be a first? - 'Got a cv? No but I've got a mumsnet thread' :-D

Did you cry? I would have 😂
Definitely get one of your own!

MNetcurtains · 27/08/2023 17:41

What a lovely person you are. You did everything right. You would make a fantastic foster mum! Brava!!
