What random things is your dog scared of?

I’ll start:

Flags fluttering or anything particularly flappy, which made coronation weekend a bit of a trial and makes me nervous about going camping…

inanimate things that look like animals or people - there is a house nearby with very large, baffling, pair of stone Great Danes outside, which shall not be passed under any circumstances.

Tinfoil, sellotape and Velcro (being pulled off the roll/ pulled apart)

Helium balloons - not to be trusted.

Tape measures. I think it stems from when she was a tiny puppy and I measured her for her first collar. I didn't strangle her or anything but now she runs away if I take it out of the drawer.

Dinopawus · 25/06/2023 14:21

The salad spinner.

TrifleForBreakfast · 25/06/2023 14:22

Christmas crackers/party poppers because of the noise. Peed on my pillow last Christmas because we accidentally pulled one with him in the room.

Not so much scared, but poor soft staffie dog is utterly disgusted and sad if the cat has caught something and left it on the back step or by the kitchen to living room door (shut in kitchen at night with a cat flap) refuses to walk past even if he is desperate for a pee.

Spanielsarepainless · 25/06/2023 14:51

Opening the understairs cupboard has my spaniel hurrying away. No idea why except the vacuum cleaner lives there and he isn't keen on being around when that's out.

rosamoschata · 25/06/2023 14:57

Head coverings again! I had a memorable encounter on a narrow cliff path when the Giant Schnauzer freaked out and wouldn’t go past an Orthodox Jew, who was in turn accompanied by a child terrified of dogs.

Hellocatshome · 25/06/2023 15:03

Oh yes DDog who is terrified of cricket bats and turbans loves fireworks, sits in the garden watching them.

BrownOwlknowsbest · 25/06/2023 15:26

Horses with riders
Horse in field, fine. Horse looking over gate, fine. Horse being led by rider, fine. But horse with human on its back= total meltdown. We live rurally so walks can be interesting

magicstar1 · 25/06/2023 15:43

Bubbles. We bought her a toy that blows meat flavour bubbles and she was too scared to approach them.
Shadows when walking at night.
She scared herself on my parents stairs last week and had to be coaxed/carried down (she’s a GSD so not that small)
Anything flappy like bags out in the road

iamjustwinginglife · 25/06/2023 15:47

Vacuum cleaners
Guitars
Hedgehogs
Buckets
Floating chlorine thing in the swimming pool!

Idiot dog!

pigsDOfly · 25/06/2023 16:07

Flies mainly.

When she was young she was frightened of:

Plastic bags blowing in the wind
Kites being flown in the park
The yellow carts that road sweepers use - do they still exist?
And, as I mentioned on another thread, someone in the park wearing a multi/brightly coloured jumper.

She is 12 years old now and those things no longer scare her. It's just the flies now (only buzzy ones though).

FavouriteDogMug · 25/06/2023 16:20

My dog hates it when a magazine slips off the arm of the sofa. Also the pop noise a plastic bottle makes if it builds up a bit of pressure when you it the lid back on.

Aria20 · 25/06/2023 16:21

@magicstar1 meat flavour bubbles?! My dog loves bubbles!! Our old next door neighbour used to have an industrial bubble machine for their grandkids and my daughter who was 3 at the time and the dog used to love chasing the bubbles that floated over the fence!

vivainsomnia · 25/06/2023 17:32

Not bothered by fireworks one bit. Even happy to be around airshows and typhoon flying over...but the sound of a fly? That makes them shake for hours!

bunnygeek · 26/06/2023 11:36

Food bowls. She won't eat out of a bowl, has to be literally food from your hand, a lickimat, or a kong (but even the Kong looked at her funny the other day and she's gone off it). If the food implement moves suddenly though, then it's too scary and she runs away.

We gave this one some thought, she doesn't like it when her collar tag clinks on anything, so that's one reason. Then her previous owners told us a story where she went under their bed, found a mouse trap, promptly got trap stuck on her nose. I don't want to know why they needed mouse traps under their bed, but that does explain some worries around food.

She's a sensitive little soul. Also won't eat in the kitchen because she hates kitchen noises, the clattering and the banging, no thanks.

bunnygeek · 26/06/2023 11:37

My girl is also afraid of flies - but not the actual fly, because flies make the humans cross, flail their arms, flap things at the fly, chase it out the house. This is a daft and scary thing to do and she usually goes and hides or looks worried when the buzzy thing comes in and stares at me waiting for me to go into flappy mode.

Andywarholswig · 26/06/2023 11:38

People wearing yellow or mustard, people walking with their coat open so it flaps, people
wearing headphones/hats or turbans. The washing basket (!) plastic bags … it is a total wuss.

Roselilly36 · 26/06/2023 11:39

Our dog, was terrified of motorbikes, ham and alcohol. And other drivers using their horn.

Roselilly36 · 26/06/2023 11:40

Oh and the rear windscreen wiper!

Housekeeperbatcocoa · 26/06/2023 11:40

Dalmatians.

No idea why - my best friend bred him so ibe known him since he was born and he's never had anything bad happen with one but he's horrorfied of them.

Leeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 26/06/2023 11:52

This one is scared of so much, but one particular 'stupid' thing is when people have their recycling out if the bag is placed inside the box for tins then it's scary and he needs to woof at it, but it's fine if it's beside the box. He is also scared of disabled people & people with curly hair, except for my Nana who is both disabled & curly

Loose plastic bags on the street
Temporary traffic lights
Molehills
Walking sticks

Oh bless - walking sticks

Hoppinggreen · 26/06/2023 11:54

Ddog hates my printer.
He recognises the tiny click it makes before it starts and barks at it

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 26/06/2023 11:56

Any/all of the Jurassic park films.

Doesn't matter what you are doing at the time, he's sitting on you and watching from the safety of your lap 🤣

MrTiddlesTheCat · 26/06/2023 11:59

One of mine is scared of puddles. He's happy to go out in the rain so long as he doesn't have to go through any puddles.

The other one is absolutely terrified of the cutlery drawer. Which is understandable and quite sad. I think the sound of it reminds her of the clanging cages in the puppy farm she was rescued from.

Both of them are scared of the cat. As am I.

Nugg · 27/06/2023 02:33

Weirdly exactly the same as yours but add in people closing wheelie bin lids and donkeys 😂
