Had to let my old boy go today

15 and half year old gorgeous lump of a yellow lab. The softest, most gorgeous, handsome, gentle dog. Saw me through the most terrible of times. Loyal to the end.

He had arthritis's and the vet said last night he had a spinal compression of the cord, his back legs were going. Not in pain from that just made mobility very, very difficult.

We've been treating his pain but this morning he could hardly stand let alone walk.

Had to make the hardest decision to let him go peacefully.

What a lovely boy! What a good life he must have had with you. It must hurt so very much, but you did the best thing for him.

Gorgeous boy! So very sorry that you had to let him go. He looks like a wonderful, soulful dog and you clearly gave him a lovely life. There's no pain quite like it, I know, but I hope you can take comfort in knowing that you did right by him and let him go before he lost his dignity. Thinking of you.

Sorry to read this. Be proud of yourself for making the right decision at the right time. He gave you a lifetime of service and love and when he needed you - you did the best for your lovely boy.

So sorry OP - what a lovely dog. We lost our beautiful rough colllie over 30 years ago & I still shed a tear when we see a doggy like him. Our furry friends become such a massive part of our lives & therefore leave a massive hole when they pass. Sending hugs & I hope your wonderful memories of Harvey will sustain you 💐💐💐

Thank you all for your lovely words. He was truly special. He helped me when I lost my son to cancer. He knew that my boy was poorly and he was so gentle with him. He got me out of the house when I felt I couldn't go on.

He let me cry with him after the deaths of my son, my mum and my dad. He was a thread running through all our lives and the tears today are for all of them.

The house feels different already. We do have another dog at home but she is pacing.

Ah my goodness @minmooch I'm so sorry. I've just had a little weep at your post, I can only imagine the hole your boy has left. He looks like such a lovely loving boy. I'm glad he had you and your sons in his life and that you've had him. We've got a beautiful beautiful hearted lab too and a dc with cancer and I'm so grateful for the love he gives, I feel such an overwhelming responsibility to give him the happiest life we can. Labrador hugs are the absolute best

So sorry for the loss of gorgeous Harvey. It’s so very hard when they get older - they accelerate away from you, while just getting sweeter and sweeter.
