Toys for tough chewers

My bouncy Jack Russell terrier gets a bit bored I think and keeps chasing the birds in the garden. He loves to have balls thrown for him but there's a limit to how long we can spend doing that! I feel like buying him some more toys/chews to keep him occupied, but he is very hard chewer. I don't want to break his teeth on things like Nyla bones or antlers, and he has a sensitive digestion so don't want to give him things like pizzles, any recommendations for interesting toys? Thanks.

Yak milk chews? The big ones. They're not cheap but they last and there's nothing alarming in them.

Yak chews or buffalo horns.
hooves are a good option too and a bit cheaper

Why would he break his teeth on nyla bone chews?

lurchermummy · 26/05/2023 22:46

Thanks, he goes through yak chews quite quickly and shreds the softer nylabones, it can't be good ingesting all that plastic - and the ones for tough chewers are really really hard.

How about real bones?

My old dog was a staffy who could get through yak chews in 20 minutes (and then throw it all up an hour later) Buffalo Horns were fantastic. Lasted him over a month easily

Yeah just go along to your friendly butcher and see what they've got , does depend on the time of week though .
Put a towel down on the floor and teach him to keep bone towel .

Kong toy - you can stuff with dog peanut butter, cheese etc
yak bars
licky mats
coffee wood

Our staffy does this! We've stopped giving her them as was quite expensive for the bigger ones.

Kong Extreme range (the black ones) are tougher than the Kong Classic range and they do small Kongs for dogs his size. You are right to avoid nylabones. Buffalo horns should be okay. Avoid hooves because they are very sharp. I know someone whose doberman had a pierced intestine from eating hooves.

Licky mats and their wobble bowls are also a good option. You could also hide treats so he has a bit of a treasure hunt around the house/garden.

Thanks all - we had a lucky mat but he chewed it, I might try getting a tougher one, we do have kongs, I might try them with different fillings but he does tend to lose them in the garden, and we had a boomer ball but he found it incredibly frustrating as he kept trying to buy it. I do sometimes chuck grated cheese on the lawn and that keeps him busy for a bit.
